Mary J Blige said "NO" to "Umbrella" also In todays Daily News theres another report of someone who passed on "Umbrella", Mary J Blige said she was offered it but she said no because "she doesnt need to chase mainstream trends". So then she worked with Umbrella's producer for Just Fine. Yeah, sure, Mary. Ironically Umbrella sounds less mainsteam than whatever Mary is cranking out these days. It's also the GOOD song of the two, whereas Just Fine is shit. [Edited 12/14/07 10:40am]

But doesn't Mary do JUST that? "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

if she wasn't chasing mainstream trends, she would have said "YES" to Umbrella.

This sounds like a bad soundbyte. Here's a more detailed article on what happened.

It just seems that this crappy little song was passed around by everyone like a party joint and then fell into the Robots lap, too bad it didnt help her album sell. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

WHAT are you talking about? For an artist with 4 singles all HUGE and for all the push this girl gets, she has only moved 800,000, though not a bad number, its crap when you think of what goes into getting her played and seen. Cant agree, but if so then POP is truly dead. "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

The songs did well but the album doesn't perform as well, that should actually tell you something. Young artists can't sell shit for albums unless it's Disney or something YET when older artists can't get a hit or radio airplay, they still debut with the number-one album (Eagles, Springsteen, etc).

I guess when someone releases four songs from an album, you expect the album to do 3 million in the US but the way things are, we're going back into the 1960s when singles did better than albums and if an album did 800K, that's a monster success.

Rihanna is at nearly 900,000 in the US now and over 3 million worldwide.

For all the hype and promo she gets she should be at Fergies level 2.5 million, especially considering this is Rihannas 3rd album, but with each sales are dropping off a bit, despite more push with each project. Its just business 101, if im putting in all this money for her (20 million is the amount) and only selling 800,000 somebodys not working out for the money spent. Sure 800,000 is great in this day and age, but not when your spending 10times that to market her thats all im saying, overseas has no bearing really because her marketing bill is just for here, thats not even with costs of touring overseas. Once again its throwing money down a hole, this is why people like Van Hunt get dropped and have to pay for their tour and videos out of pocket. I would buy that but look at Fergie? Now she never even had a record till this one, and she is nearing 2.5 million in the USA alone, and she also has had alot of singles, Rihanna is on her 3rd record and still hasnt hit a million despite the singles and the media attention. And seriously there isnt too much distinction between the 2 ladies musically. I know you're supposed to be some sort of insider, but please start getting your sales facts straight: Music of the Sun: 600,000 US, 1.6 million WW A Girl Like Me: sitting at about the same as GGGB in the US, 2.6 million WW GGGB: 870,000 US, 3.2 million WW (and will probably hit at least 4-4.5 million by the time they are done with singles)
