Funny thing is that Sirius, which granted, reaches a limited audinece, went out of their way to play lots of Duran Duran all November. I mean, not just the old stuff. The stations that play newer music played lots of the tracks from the CD, the guys did Howard Stern and where featured on lots of the music channels talking about the CD. I just dug out Britney's "Blackout" (as if it where a year old or something) and damn is she not doing any favors by not making any attempt at promotion. And its true sales numbers and airplay dont go hand and hand at all anymore, especially if you are an older artist, i mean the Eagles and Bruce are prime examples of it this year. As for Duran Duran it was a big gamble trying what they were trying, and i still question the timing of this album more than anything, releasing a Duran Duran record right before the Xmas rush, no wonder its gotten pretty lost in the shuffle.

If Jive isn't spending a lot of money, more power to them since they basically knew that Britney herself wouldn't put herself out there so why go crazy with commericals and stuff if only hardcore supporters, less causal fans than before and maybe some "car crash" observers are the only buyers. Reaching a new audience she didn't, but I'm thinking it was a success considering it was not treated like a super comeback but the modest release it ended up.

How the hell is Rihanna only selling that many copies? I mean, her figures aren't horrendous, but given that she's technically a hitmaking artist right now, you'd expect she'd be on par, or at least near, Justin Timberlakes figures.

I mean you cant even get a power ballad played anymore, or really even recorded. I heard two stories from a guy at Universal that really sum up what is going on, one was about Bon Jovi's single for "lost highway", this was sent to radio and not played because it was too fast? really too fast? Another story was about UK super-pop group Girls Aloud, now they have had 17 straight top 10 singles and Universal was looking to sign them here to a distribution deal, but they backed away when they heard many of the songs claiming they were just too fast for Top 40 radio, the quote was mainly "They need to slow down, so people can pick out that one or two lines" mainly they were looking for a simple hook because radio play at this point has been slowed and dumbed down.

Is it just me, or Britney's Blackout is clearly a flop?

Grunge really just took the LIFE out of it, so when Grungfe really ended, and Rock came back, in its place was a more of a depressing Rock sound, not the tone or the writing was depressing, the way songs were structured, so really what was born from the Grunge era are the Nickelback-like groups and if they arent like that then they are like Korn or Linkin Park, so really the melody was taken out of Rock.

i really enjoy the arena rock station on music choice on comcast cable..a radio format like that would be cool and they could mix it up with new stuff

Yes, but she used to bust ass promoting and created at least four big production videos for each disc (although I think with "In the Zone", she only got to make about 3.2 since they never attempted to finish "Outrageous" with any kind of stock footage but just played a second clip where she kissed Snoop Dogg).

Celine, as someone said (probably chart expert lastdecemeber), will make a slow burn on the charts and continue selling even though her debut wasn't great. Wouldn't be shocked if she hits 1 million before Feb. That's pretty damn good now of days. The tour will probably aid sales, too.

I mean that would be like saying Prince's whole career outside of maybe 2-3 albums was a FLOP, Bruce Springsteen was a Flop with the exception of 1-2 albums. Britney Spears Blackout is a Gold Record in a month with no promotion, no tour, no tv, no postive press, and only one single with a video that really never was made to be shown, so i dont view that as a flop i just really think we've gotten so used to this soundscan crap, that we dont realize that sometimes records dont sell 2 million after a month, especially now, i mean now someone with 4 top 10 singles has barley sold 800,000, is that impressive?

Her sales were declining from In the Zone, that album was called a flop and yet sold 5 million worldwide, so i dont really take stock in what is called success and flops, i just look at whats a good record for that person and what isnt, i could care less about numbers since im not getting a check from it. But with that being said then everyone from Prince to George Michael to Bruce Springsteen to Stevie Wonder has had a career FULL of nothing but FLOPS with the exception of a few albums.
