Tori in Oakland Tori Amos performed in Oakland last night at the Paramount Theater, the most beautiful theater I have ever been in:
I can't find the full set list yet for Saturday, so I'll post Friday's, which was also at the Paramount: Act I – Santa * Body and Soul * She’s Your Cocaine * Hoochie Woman * Secret Spell * You Can Bring Your Dog * Raspberry Swirl Interlude * Professional Widow Act II – Tori * Big Wheel * Crucify * Sugar * Cornflake Girl * Bells for Her * Caught a Lite Sneeze T & Bö * “woman in the mirror” improv * Winter * Cooling Band Returns * Virginia * Hotel * Code Red First Encore * Precious Things * Bouncing Off Clouds Second Encore * Hey Jupiter Last night I got a Pip show. For some reason, I had been singing Cruel all day, and she opened with that. Later, Pip dropped to her knees and sang Fat Slut and a very, very long complicated version of The Waitress. She played Cloud on My Tongue which is my favorite Tori song. My other faves were Hotel and Bliss. Wow! what a difference from the last tour!!! They were filming for a DVD she's making. The scene was incredibly glamourous with spectacular light design. She seemed to be playing her most high charged, glamourous and universally loved songs. Her hairdresser kept coming out between pieces and brushing her wig. She even improvised a little song called "Hair brushing time" while he fixed her up. The show was long and very satisfying. I think the ending performance of Hey Jupiter was one of the most beautiful musical experiences I have ever had. I'm going again tonight, but they're not filming, so it will be interesting to see the difference. I'll write more of a review when I can post the setlist.

I bet the sound was amazing there.....seems like that place would have great acoustics. I wish she'd get rid of "Hey Jupiter", yeah, I know I'm in the minority with that one. looking for you in the woods tonight Switch FC SW-2874-2863-4789 (Rum&Coke)

I'm so glad you got to go!
I've been into Tori for what feels like forever now and she's never been this 'on' or versatile or dynamic live before. The whole doll concept has really come to life and is workin' for her. I got to see all the songs you highlighted as well and they were all standouts. More soon.

Honestly, the sound was MUCH better the first night when I was sitting in the back of the orchestra section. It was awesome. The second night, I was in the second row balcony. The vocals were way too loud, and the bass too, so it became somewhat unpleasant.

Saturday night was much more "on" than Sunday. The people who sold me the tickets went to the sound check and warned me Tori was in a really bad mood. She didn't do any acting with the character Clyde - just showed up and played the songs. I could not relate to this setlist at all. The repeats from the night before, with the exception of Bliss, were not my favorites: Big Wheel, Cornflake Girl, Crucify, Precious Things. I'm also not a fan of The Power of Orange Knickers, but she really got into that one. Juarez, Rattlesnakes, Josephine, Siren, and Landslide were all songs I don't know which was surprising because I usually know every song! I was happy to hear A Sorta Fairytale and Bliss a second time. Code Red seemed stronger than the night before. The best part was when she screwed up Crucify. She was into the first verse, then suddenly shouted "FUCK! FUCK!" into the microphone! Then she improvised "Sometimes words get in the way, when all I want to do is play". Then she started the song from the beginning again. I thought it interesting from my vantage point -- I could see her lyrics sheets spread out, but she needs no help with remembering the music. After Saturday night especially, I felt I got a deeper understanding of her music. All in all, it was fabulous to spend the weekend with Tori.

"Juarez" and "Josephine" are on To Venus And Back, my second favorite Tori album. "Rattlesnakes" is a Lloyd Cole cover from the Strange Little Girls album. The cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide" is from the compilation Y100 Sonic Sessions Volume 1. "Siren" is from the Great Expectations soundtrack and on the box sent I sent you.

I don't have those two albums yet. The cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide" is from the compilation Y100 Sonic Sessions Volume 1.
I had a feeling that was not a Tori song. It didn't sound like something she had written. "Siren" is from the Great Expectations soundtrack and on the box sent I sent you.
I thought maybe that was the case. I'll have to check it again.

I'm glad to hear you had a great weekend and at least loved the first show.

I'm glad to hear you had a great weekend and at least loved the first show. I can see now how this can take over a person's life. I'm listening to Siren a lot now. I did recognize it, but couldn't place it during the show. Gosh, there are sooooo many songs, it's difficult to wrap one's head around it all. I feel like I have to embark upon an in-depth analysis of Sunday's setlist, with a set of lyric sheets, because maybe I'll appreciate it more. I'm probably missing something. I never ran into Sassy.
