agreed. Mainstream rap is atrocious.

Intellect doesn't sell unfortunately. Sales mean nothing to true music fans though.

Canibus is the greatest writer in the history of makind imo and he gets shitted on by hip hop fans for being too complex.

Hip hop can be divided in 3 sections:

Mainstream

Underground

Experimental

I'm glad to see there r some more Canibus fans around here. He is a superb lyricist. But again, lyrics have taken a back seat to hooks and beats. There is still some dope Hip-Hop out here, the sad reality of it is though, you have to go out of your way to find it.

Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth!

Man, that was a really sublime album, that Liquid Swords. I hated Beneath the Surface though.

For recent examples of MC's covering "important stuff," check out Talib Kweli's "Eat To Live" from Ear Drum or "U, Black Maybe," from Common's Finding Forever or "Katrina Clap" from Mos Def's Tru Magic.

Right on, and those are totally mainstream* (*Hey, Finding Forever is nominated for a Grammy and Eardrum debuted at #1).

They could rap about God and Jesus but it still wouldn't stop it from being boring. Put some instruments behind it and then rap about something important if you absolutely must rap instead of sing.

Can't argue with that reasoning. Com and the MCs Formerly Known As Black Stsr are not underground anymore.
