Leela is supposed to be releasing a sophomore album I hope it contains the concept as her debut album. She seems too intelligent to fall into that trap.

Don't get me wrong; I like Joss Stone....but I LOVE Leela James!! What did woogiebear say? The TRUUUUUTH? Without a doubt!! I, too, hope she has something new out soon and that it's as good as her first CD.

If they oversing, then who sings just enough?

I completely agree. They are not as bad as Christina Aguilera, but they do tend to oversing too much.

Again, I ask, who sings "just enough"? The term "oversing" has taken on a new life in recent years but I have yet to see anyone define the line to it.

Good question BK. There are so many singers that can't sing, that's for sure, but it seems to me that many who can actually sing go overboard most of the time.

I happen to like Mary J. Blige, but I find her oversinging more and more lately too. Even thought Whitney has been out of the spotlight for years, I never thought she oversang. I guess that's why I like the Amy Winehouse cd so much because she just sings and doesn't yell or go on and on with notes that eventually go out of tune. Joni Mitchell doesn't over sing, nor does Gloria Estefan or Norah Jones.

I believe when Leela sings she sings from her heart and soul and deep down in her guts.

Whereas Joss sings there is really no heart it is all about show and image.

To those who speak of oversinging, let me explain a lil' something to ya. The style a lot of neo-soul singers and some contemporary R&B singers do stems from the black churches. In church, people expect you to express your love for God through song. Sing your heart out! This style is very well accepted and sometimes even expected under certain circumstances. If you don't understand it or can't relate to it, its probably because its a cultural thing that's not aimed at you - mainstream listener - so in a sense its not for you. The crowd that listens to Leela and artists like her wouldn't have it any other way, so....GET OVER IT. Its not "oversinging" because there's no such thing. Comedians parody it but actually very few singers overdo it. There are a few that do from time to time, but Leela isn't one of them. Her crowd loves what she does, what Angie Stone does, what Patti LaBelle does and what singers from Jennifers Hudson to Holiday do. R&B is about emotion and expressing it.
Its funny how people like Kurt Kobain could yell in the mic, all of these emo bands, punk bands, death metal bands and other noise-makers can yell to their hearts content but once its done in tune to a smooth track it becomes unacceptable. So, later 4 y'all.

I'm probably going to have to agree. Leela James' voice wasn't all that nice on that video. I didn't even want to finish watching it, quite frankly. And, Joss Stone.....well, she tries too hard at times.

At least they can fucking sing. Sick and tired of hearing people complain about oversinging when you have a shit singer like "Rihanna" wobbling all over the air.

Leela James can sing her ass off.

You are my hero for this post.

You can be in a rock band just screaming not even in time with the music and everyone thinks it great (LOL) but be an RnB singer bring some emotion and you are over singing.

Leela Rocks,

But Joss will still get the most props cos she's a better 'gimmick'

Picture a room full of music execs..

and put a black female vocalist in a room with a voice like Leelas
Now bring in a white female vocalist with a voice like Leelas

White chick will get the props the deal and the support.

This would be the case in the UK things may be alittle different in the US.

On a separate but related note, imho Joss should really take the rock/blues route and channel her inner Janice... If she did that she could rule the world seriously.

That's true but keep in mind Joss is no original. Her deepest fault is that she is to busy trying to sound like a clone of her soul influences. which questions my credibilty to really see her as a soul singer. Just listen to her speech patterns and it is not stereotype but she has a British accent but when she sings why does her speech patterns sound like a southern blues woman. When you are a soul singer a you are supposed to have your own voice and she does not have her own voice. Some people will say it is because Joss is young and will eventually find her own voice but Leela is around the same age as Joss probably a little bit older and when I look at her I just see her singing and not trying to sound like someone else I just hear her voice and plus her singing is natural.

I agree Joss is infatuated with the 'soul' thing right now but shes young.. she still has time to find her real voice and mature.

When she does eventually do that I hope the inner Janice I hear and see when I watch her perform comes out..

If that Kid decided to rock she would kick ass.
