Debbie Gibson Appreciaition Thread!

I love me some Debbie Gibson and I still think "only in my dreams" is pop perfection. This chick was only 13 when she came on the scene and was writing, producing and playing piano. I was so in awe of her becuase I was only a few years younger and found her to be a true inspriration. My fave tracks by her are, Electric Youth, Only in my dreams, Foolish beat.

Any other Debbie Fans out there?

Her first album is fun. I lost interest after that. But, yeah, Only in My Dreams is a great pop song. Still dig it. In fact...

biggrin

She's also got that odd Billboard record - youngest person ever to write, produce and perform a #1 song for Foolish Beat.

When you figure it out, I'd love to know why that was so amazing and everything Madonga does sucks. lol

I think it had to do with the fact that Ms. Gibson actually played instruments and wrote her own stuff.

wink

hell yeah! she was like the original A. Keys! lol i think the reason why she wasn't bigger is because she didn't show any skin. confused

She had a good producer to show her the ropes (Fred Zarr), but otherwise, her writing all the songs off her first 2 albums makes for a samey, rather bland experience.

Infact, her 1992 album "body, mind and soul" was her most consistant effort, but fell on deaf ears, particually after that silly "shock ur mama" song. I love the guys behind the track (Evan Rogers and Carl Sturken), but that track was embarrassing.

She co-wrote a few songs with Legend Lamont Dozier off for her 3rd album. Shame she never really grew that much as a songwriter, though "body, mind and soul" does deal with aids and date rape (albeit simply but its still clear what she is singing about).

Theres one cut she did called "silence speaks (a thousand words)". Its an album track off "electric youth" (crap album), and the melody and even the lyrics showed real promise of artistic growth, but it never really happened after that, despite as I said, singing about more serious subjects like aids etc....

Speaking of that R&B sounding pop classic:

My fam had the 45. In my mind's garden I kinda reduce her career to this one track.
