Broadway Albums - Anybody? I have a soft spot for broadway albums, maybe its becoz they're part of my upbringing since my mother loved them and played them to infinity. I came to appreciate them profoundly these years,,,and I love the snappy quality in their lyrics.
This is the only showtune I could find in youtube... Ms.Ruth Brown - If I Can't Sell It

When I'm in the mood for some swinging, over-the-top musical moments, I go for:
Jesus Christ Superstar Evita Rent Barbra Streisand's The Broadway Album and Back to Broadway Bette Midler's Experience the Divine (I know, it's not Broadway, but it works just as well). Stand at the crossroads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths...(Jeremiah 6:16) www.ancientfaithradio.com

I agree with you about the studio album. Sometimes, it total different compared to how its performed on stage. Each night is different. [Edited 12/4/07 19:27pm]

NOOOOO!!!! NOOOOO!!!!! What about this? You guys automatically think Ethel Merman & Liza Minelli when you hear about broadway, but its much DEEPER than that. And it doesn't always have to be camp or over the top. And beside some of the greatest Jazz composers were originally showtunes composers.. Cole Porter Fats Waller Ira Gershwin Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein II Even the Duke himself tackled the broadway scene with his Black Brown & Beige suite This is really the 1st broadway album I ever heard growing up along with The Whiz...

Okay, I've calmed down a bit. And I did have the privilege of seeing Phyllis Hyman & Gregory Hines(RIP to both) in 'Sophisticated Ladies' back in 1981. I thought you were into "Legs Diamond' or 'Aspects of Love'. I'd rather listen to country or death metal than that shit. But Barbara Streisand sucks. I ain't changin' my mind on that. Strictly for the blue-haired crowd.

Barbra today is a mess. Broadway Barbra - before she lost her mind and moved to LA - is amazing.

I think that's where I developed my hatred of Broadway. I wanted to scream at the teacher, take that sh!t off and put on some damn P-Funk already!
