Is This Really A Fifty Year Old Woman?

I posted a clip of this performance on an MJ thread, but it was in terrible quality. This is much better. Many of you will have heard me slagging off soulless fakes like Janet, Madonna, Britney, etc. Well, if any of you were wondering what the qualities are that they lack, you can find them here. Firstly, LIVE singing which is mandatory. Secondly, natural movement which comes out of the moment, not out of a choreographer's notebook. Thirdly, heart and soul, which is linked to the previous point. Cyndi has a sense of freedom when she's performing that only people who are the REAL DEAL can have. It's also tied in with a fourth point. Personality. She is a person, not a type, and that comes through in her voice, attitude, clothes and even just the expression on her face when she sings.

Finally, the song has a melody and a warm, uplifting message. All this is about HEART. That's a quality she has that I think her gay audience appreciates, based on their comments on Youtube. She should have a far broader audience than that though. With org favourites like Janet and MJ on the skids and Madonna whoring herself out to shit hop, maybe a few of you might consider turning your attention to a warmer, more genuine artist. And like the thread title says, she's FIFTY years old here. eek I'm gonna shut up now and leave you lucky people to enjoy four minutes of the best female performer of the 00s, and let me repeat she's in her FIFTIES! lol

No way. Botox paralyses the muscles in the face. Cyndi's still got just as much expression as ever.

I am a longtime fan of Ms.Cyndi. She is the real deal. I've seen her live a couple times and she has left me in tears when she sings 'Shine'...that song was dedicated to me by my brother and it's our song...everytime we hear it...we cry...

Cyndi Lauper can sing circles around today's pop stars.

Don't get me wrong, I like Cyndi. But I find it hard to believe that a 50-year-old woman can still look like her early 30's without taking something aside.

I understand exactly where you're coming from, cause neither do I.
But, in truth some on the org feel as if others on the org do!

The first time I heard "Shine" was when I saw this performance. It grabbed me right away. The song's an anthem. This is kind of a classic Cyndi Lauper theme. From "True Colours" to her newest one "Grab A Hold", the song of encouragement and support has always been her forte. But I would never have expected her to still be doing some of her best work this late in her career. It's good to know some people actually get better as they get older. She didn't make her definitive album "Hat Full Of Stars" until she was 40!

this forum has evolved into an interesting forum where folks throw out their industry/genre creed and shut down others...its one thing to jokingly poke fun at other artists one doesn't like but another thing all together to shut down other's musical taste just because you don't like it.

aight, that was an off topic rant. sorry. lol

Well, if you see her more recently you'll see she's not making much effort to hide the ageing process. In the same way that Prince seemed eternally young for years, and then his age suddenly started to show in 2004, a similar thing happened with Cyndi at the same time (this performance is 2002). She still looks great, but she's quite happy to be photographed without make up in poor lighting and looking very natural. I really can't see Cyndi falling into the same trap other women in the industry have...*cough* dolly parton *cough*

Okay. Confession time. Cyndi is actually 48 or 49 in that clip, not 50. But just so you don't think I'm being completely misleading, here's a clip of her going apeshit on a talkshow in late 2003 when she certainly was exactly 50 years old (she was born in 1953). She's actually dressed quite respectably here, but behaving anything but. I think she frightened the life out of the audience. Anyway, here you go....

It's just a shame that real female performers got shut out after MTV came in, and studio technology enabled lesser talents to record with impunity. There are too many ways to mask mediocrity now. When you see performances like this you see exactly what we're missing. You see how homogenised and calculated everything has become. This matters 'cos it means younger atists with potential are set a bad example and the cycle of soullessness perpetuates itself. That's what I'm highlighting in my post. You call it shitting on others. Well, those others have been shitting on real talent now for years so if I can throw a bit of the brown stuff back their way then that's fine. But all I'm really doing is highlighting the difference between real and fake. Cyndi's real. Most of the big name females who came after her are just mannequins.

Looks like someone got out of bed the wrong side this morning. All people are saying is she looks younger than her years. I actually was thinking about her energy though, as much as her looks. If you see Madonna dancing these days, her moves are very stiff compared to what they once were. By contrast, Cyndi still sprints about just the same as ever.

Band was funny. Old men on percussion with white suits and bow ties.

Plus, she tries to end the song twice in a dramatic swing of her arm - nothing. Kinda funny. Imagine if that happened to Prince - or worse, James Brown? Heads would role.

But - point taken, she looks and sounds good. Good for her.
