Who Were The Sylvers? Ok, yes I've heard the song Boogie Fever, but I want to know more about this band. I've heard that they have quite both tragedy and trimuphant filled stories about them. I've also heard that they weren't the chart-topping musicial families as the Jacksons were, but I will say that they were definitely more musically-based than many of those bands. Anyone has any more info about them?

The Sylvers are originally from Memphis, Tenn. Here are the members' names and birth dates:
Olympia-Ann "Olan" Sylvers (b. October 13, 1951) Leon Sylvers III (b. March 7, 1953) Charmaine Elaine Sylvers (b. March 9, 1954) James Jonathan Sylvers (b. June 8, 1955) Edmund Theodore Sylvers (b. January 25, 1957, d. March 11, 2004) Joseph Richard "Ricky" Sylvers (b. October 13, 1958) Angela Marie "Angie" Sylvers (b. April 11, 1960) Patricia Lynn "Pat" Sylvers (b. March 25, 1961) Foster Emerson Sylvers (b. February 25, 1962) Originally called The Little Angels (the group was Olympia, Leon, Charmaine and James at that time), the group changed its name to the Sylvers after Ricky and Edmund joined. They released three albums on the MGM/Pride label -- "The Sylvers," "The Sylvers 2," and "The Sylvers 3." These LPs were comprised of numbers written by Leon and produced by Jerry Butler (yes, THAT Jerry Butler) and Keg Johnson. The notable hit songs during this period were "Fool's Paradise" (peaked at No. 14 on the Billboard R&B Singles charts in 1972), "Wish That I Could Talk To You" (No. 10, 1973), "Stay Away From Me" (No. 33, 1973) and "Through the Love In My Heart" (No. 50, 1974). In early 1973 Leon penned the hit "Misdemeanor" for little brother Foster (peaking at No. 7). In 1975 Foster, along with sisters Angela and Pat, joined the group and The Sylvers signed with Capitol Records. Teamed with producer Freddie Perren and co-writer Keni St. Lewis, The Sylvers topped the charts with "Boogie Fever" in late 1975 and followed up with "Cotton Candy" (No. 19, 1976). Charmaine left the group and then the group had another smash hit, "Hot Line." (No. 3, 1976) and its follow-up, "High School Dance." (No. 6, 1977). Later that year, Olympia retired to have children and The Sylver opted not to work with Perren. Their self-produced album "New Horizon" garnered the singles "Any Way You Want Me" (No. 12, 1977) and the title track (No. 45, 1978). Later, the group signed with Casablanca Records and Leon was approached by record executive Dick Griffey to become the in-house producer for SOLAR Records. The Sylvers' last hit was "Don't Stop, Get Off" (No. 15, 1978). You don't know the Sylvers. They came after similar family bands like the Five Stairsteps and the J5. Edmund even voiced Marlon in the J5 cartoon. PRINCE: Always and Forever

Obviously, the most successful member of the family was Leon Sylvers, who was the top producer on the soul music scene from the late 1970s through the early 1980s. Sylvers' work was with virtually all of SOLAR Records' initial acts, The Whispers, Shalamar, Lakeside and Dynasty. Sylvers also played a part in the development of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis' production career, having worked with them on The S.O.S. Band's "High Hopes."
Most people are familiar with some of the hit songs Sylvers produced: "It's All the Way Live" - Lakeside "Save the Overtime (for Me)" - Gladys Knight & The Pips "And the Beat Goes On" - The Whispers "The Second Time Around" - Shalamar "I Just Begun to Love You" - Dynasty "It's a Love Thing" - The Whispers "A Night To Remember" - Shalamar "Make That Move" - Shalamar "You Keep Me Coming Back" - The Brothers Johnson "This Is for the Lover in You" - Shalamar "Hold On to What You've Got" - Evelyn "Champagne" King "In the Raw" - "The Whispers "Dead Giveaway" - Shalamar "Tonight" - The Whispers "Flirt" - Evelyn "Champagne" King Among other things, Sylvers produced half of Janet Jackson's first album. His wife Nidra Beard was a member of the group Dynasty. Foster Sylver had a hit called "Misdemenor" which is a underground R&B classic. Easy to find for download or on many compilations. It was often mistaken for another jam by the Jackson 5.
His solo lp though is very hard to find. Straight Jacket Funk Affair

It would be cool if Soul Train could play the episode when the Sylvers took over the whole show.
I remember reading a interview w/Foster saying he was going to take bass guitar lessons from Bootsy.

Foster wasn't the lead singer. If there was a lead singer, it was the late Edmund Sylvers. Initially, several members including Edmund took turns singing lead but in their later years Edmund performed the lead vocals on The Sylvers' biggest hits. I always thought that The Syvlers were basically what The Jacksons would have been if Michael Jackson was not a member. Basically, a lineup of Jermaine, Rebbie, Jackie, Tito, Marlon and Randy (and possibly Latoya). Yeah, I remember that interview; in fact, I remember reading (think it was in Right On) that Foster was aspiring to be a session player on Leon's productions. Really do you have more info about this? Could it sound at all like Dangerous? The reason I ask is because, Cee pointed this stuff out to me, and it instantly reminded me of the Jacksons. Especially the song, "We Can Make It If We Try." I realize that this isn't probably what a lot of the die-hard Sylvers fans wanna hear, but it is the truth. Listen to Dancin' Machine and then pop on "We Can Make It If We Try" Same lead vocalist....(In a Jim Carrey voice from The Mask) "I'D LIKE TO THINK SO!" MJ Fan 1992-Forever

I remember the Sylvers, especially Foster and Edmund. I had the Boogie Fever album. I knew some of them did production work outside of the group but didn't know what songs. Now listening to the Concept album I can hear their sound in the Whispers and Shalamar songs. Shame to read about Foster's current sitch. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

I was listening to the music spots of their 1977 album, New Horizons from this Youtube clip and I was pretty impressed. This was one musical family that really had a mature sound, getting into jazzier and funky sounds of that time. It's one particular song from that album that I think is groovy, which is, Starfire. It has that cool, pimp-sounding, gangster-lean groove to it that is unbeatable to me. It's a shame that most of their output hasn't been reissued to CD yet and the albums are still out of print.
