i stand corrected..but this is still based on airplay alone...and to register a few points above brandy isnt something one should be bragging about. sigh

wink

The single will be available in stores this coming Tuesday (Oct.22) which will inevitably send the song straight into the Top 10.Personally,I think it's amazing for ANY artist to debut that high, based on airplay alone.Either way you slice it,Madonna has another smash hit on her hands.

OH PLEASE!! These movie critics need to get a life.So Madonna has another flop movie.Big freakin deal! She has survived many flop movies and she is STILL around.Another thing is,"Swept Away" cost only $10 Million to make, and it is only playing on 196 theatres in the U.S.So,clearly,it wasn't meant to be a big Hollywood blockbuster.I think it's meant to be a smaller, independent film,so naturally,it's not gonna become a critic's favorite and make $100 Million!! But for critics to suggest that she should retire after this film, that's just absurd. Her new single "Die Another Day" just debuted at Number 41 on the charts (based on airplay alone) and it's a foregone conclusion that it will become another Number One hit for her. It's the highest debuting song of 2002,so far.(This week,it moves up to Number 28 with a bullet).

Movies are really just a "side project" for her anyway, just something to do in-between hit albums and sold-out world tours. To those people who wish she would retire,Madonna addresses them in her new single..."I guess I'll Die Another Day,it's not my time to go".

davideye, davideye, davideye... biggrin

your post further proves that madonna fams make up facts just to support their famanticism...

point 1) this article points out many other people's annoyance (Camille Paglia!!!) other then the critics...

point 2) Die Another Day is *not* the biggest debuting song this year (sales *and* airplay)..*THAT* honor would go to Elvis' song which debuted at #1 or that Kelly Wiggim song which is the biggest selling debut (just sales..her airplay debut at 57, the following week with sales it reached #1) since 1996.

point 3) indi films are too made to please audiences *and* critics...My Big Fat Greek Wedding was made for 8 million and has grossed over 150 mill so far...Guy Richie was chasing the fame and creed w/ his films since day 1. Dont tell me just because he married Madonna he changed his tune.

Or, should we loose all objectivity to keep Maddy on this high pedestal? wink

***Point 1)---That article was written by a critic,Mary McNamara of the Los Angeles Times. The article contains quotes from other movie critics (NY Times). It's just yet another trashing of Madonna by jealous critics, whose opinions are no more valid than yours and mine.

***Point 2---Moonbeam already proved this point,so no need for me to interfere (thanks,Moonbeam!!).

***Point 3)---"Swept Away" was obviously not conceived to be some big Hollywood blockbuster. It had a shoestring budget ($10 million, which it will recoup on video and overseas release),a largely unknown cast (except for Madonna,of course),and it doesn't even have a theme song by it's star.THAT pretty much proves that they weren't trying to make "Star Wars" or "Titanic".

***Point 2---Moonbeam already proved this point,so no need for me to interfere (thanks,Moonbeam!!).

and again you ignore the fact that this is not a big accomplishment at all...this debut isnt even a phenom for Maddy, as the article from billboard points out...other songs (maddy or other artist) have debuted much higher...your initial statement was a declaration that this is the biggest hit/debut of the year...just not true...Brandy's What About was supposed to be the biggest hit prior? Yet Elvis' and that American Idol song did something Brandy nor Maddy did..DRIVE SALES *and* airplay...thats the testiment of a hit...

***Point 3)---"Swept Away" was obviously not conceived to be some big Hollywood blockbuster. It had a shoestring budget ($10 million, which it will recoup on video and overseas release),a largely unknown cast (except for Madonna,of course),and it doesn't even have a theme song by it's star.THAT pretty much proves that they weren't trying to make "Star Wars" or "Titanic".

this move is universally panned by critics *and* movie going audiences... its a flop even for an indie film...Punch-Drunk Love made more money in five theaters then Swept Away did in over 100. Dont dismiss the lack of sales ..The films tanked!!! If this movie starred Jodie Foster, it would be considered a flop... This week's sales show that Swept Away is averaging 3 ticket sales per showing...3!!! lol

I agree Madonna can't act out of a bag...and yet she still gets roles. I wonder if her second marriage is doombed cause if u remember she worked with Sean Penn it the rotten Shanghi Surprise (playing a missionary ROFLAMO) and they went their separate ways after it bombed.

I bet she gets the Rassie next year for worst actress.

Well, your certainly entitled to your opinion. However ,Id just like to say that I was very impressed with the show when I saw it on HBO.Im no fan of Madonna.I like some of her music and I enjoy her personality, but I wouldnt say Im a fan.The things that impressed me were:

1.her selection of tunes- I assumed it was going to be an 80s hit-fest and was prepared to be bored.Instead she focused on newer material ,much of which I had never heard before. This kept the whole experience fresh for me.

2. the choreography was pretty impressive & her dancers were good.

3.the choice of set-pieces and costumes seemed pretty original-again, something I wasnt expecting.

Overall, I wasnt expecting to enjoy the show and was pleasently suprised.

First of all,I don't even really know who this "Camille Paglia" person is (nor do I care) and like I said before, her opinion is no more valid than yours or mine. So,don't act like just because *SHE* hates something,it must be awful.

I saw the "Drowned World" tour twice last year and I thought it was simply amazing.Madonna could have played it safe and just did an easy,by-the-numbers "Greatest Hits tour" but she dedided to challenge herself and her audience with a stunning,complex,Broadway-like musical extravanganza that kicked ASS!!! She played only a few old songs, mostly concentrating on her newer, more experimental material. That's a bold move for ANY artist and you know it!!

I'm beginning to think that you dislike ANY female artist besides Bjork,Janet and Wendy and Lisa.Speaking of Bjork, how many Oscars did she win for her movie last year??

Who is Camille Paglia?

Handsome, sharp and vigorous, exuberant, manic and abusive are just some of the adjectives which can and have been applied to Camille Paglia, the motor-mouthed academic and cultural critic of Italian-American background and 'wavering sexual orientation'. Paglia was catapulted into media stardom when, following publication of her book, Sexual Personae, in 1992, she achieved fame if not infamy with expressions of her admiration for Madonna, and her involvement in bitter public controversies about 'date rape' and the state of academe.

Like Nietzsche, a source of influence along with Freud, Jung and Amelia Earhart, Paglia is a sort of anti-intellectual intellectual, who lauds vigorous scholarly discipline and the mass pop culture of modern society. Whilst criticising postmodernist philosophising, she's a prophet of postmodern culture. This ambiguity runs deep. Difficult to put into a neat, preconceived, pigeon-hole, she has been accused of being both an anti-feminist and a neoconservative, while claiming, herself, to be a genuine libertarian whose cultural critiques have merely upset the feminist party line and the academic gravy train.

For Paglia, female power is sexual power, and sex is dark and dangerous. This innate female power is exercised through beauty and glamour, values denied or rejected by the anti-aesthetic puritanism of contemporary feminists, whom she further provoked by suggesting that women should take some responsibility for their own safety. This, she argues, is not to condone rape and brutality, but to add an element of realism. Paglia sees female vulnerability largely as a problem for naive upper middle class WASPs whose utopian assumptions and rejection of biological reality have rendered them vulnerable.

Paglia sees civilisation as a fragile brake on human cruelty, a brake removed by extreme ideas of freedom indulged in the 60s. This makes her view of the human condition essentially conservative, but she is far from being a conservative.

Paglia is in her element scourging the pretentiousness and shoddiness of pseudo-leftist academics who have made a dull, if lucrative, career out of social deconstructionism à la Derrida and Foucault. At her best, she is a well-oiled critical machine-gun, subjecting her targets to a withering and remorseless fusillade. At her worst, she is drunk on the aggressive thrill of her own invective - vituperative and repetitious.

Paglia, who is Professor of Humanities at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, is in love with visual and aural culture, and is conducting a duel against the 'word-fetishism' of cultural criticism emanating from English departments. As a prophet of modern popular culture she follows in the footsteps of Marshall McLuhan, while her knowing references to its minutiae recall the sardonic treatment of the same in the work of Quentin Tarantino.

Ohh...contraire

im a huge Aime Mann, kdlang, Meshell, Sinead, Tracy Chapman, Eryka Badu, Jill Scott, Sade, Toni Childs, Kate Bush and Lisa Stansfield fan...

and I enjoy a lot of what Madonna does, on wax...but that last tour (IMHO) was a turkey...and many critics and non-maddy-fams pointed that out...

now, as far as Bjork not winning an Oscar..Well, she did get nominated two years ago for her song ..(something Maddy has never achieved) yet lost to that walking dino that is Bob Dylan...She did however win numerous acting awards, CANNES!!!, Independent Spirit Award, Chicago Film Critics, National Board of Reviews, European Film Awards...take that info as you choose...this isnt a matter of "my favorite artist is better then yours"...i just like to poke fun at the huge exagerations that are given on Madonna's behalf on the org...

He also said that her downfall is trying to *act* or become another character other then her own...She can mugg her way through a film no problem (exteme facial reactions...giving attitude) but the minute she tries to talk and give emotions, she fails...

at anyrate...he showed an interview he did with her right after winning her Golden Globe for Evita..He asked her how she felt or something like that and she responded, "this is proof that im a good actress...i am a good actress!!". he then responded off air "no she isnt".. lol..
He said her success with Evita was more to do with her great talent at "performing" but then highlighted the point that she had *no* speaking dialog...

"Desperately Seeking Susan" was a huge box office smash in the summer of '85..."Dick Tracy" was THE summer smash of 1990..."Truth Or Dare" was widely praised by the critics and it became a huge success..."A League Of Their Own" was another critic's favorite and a box office hit..."Evita" won Madonna a Golden Globe for Best Actress, and the film was also a heavily-hyped box office smash.Madonna's last movie 'The Next Best Thing' was a bomb, but even IT manged to reach the Top 5 movie list, making alot of money it's opening weekend.

This is the equivalent of the quality/commerciality argument for music. Is "Purple Rain" Prince's best album because of its success?

"Dancer in the Dark" won best film at the Cannes Film Festival in 2000. That says a lot! Bjork also won "Best Actress." I highly recommend it!

i think you need to separate whats succesful. An Indie Hit is not neccesarily based on dollars earned...Eve's Bayou is considered a huge indie hit and it only grossed $17million...While Iron Giant made $46million and is considered a flop...

Both Dancer In The Dark *and* Swept Away are indie films...yet Swept Away is a collosal flop even for an indie...Dancer *did* play in San Jose..It also played in San Francisco, Sacramento, Berkeley and Oakland..Believe it or not, it actually had a short run here in Pleasanton...This is how Indie Films are released...slowely..they build in audience... My Big Fat Greek Wedding is a perfect example of this...That film never reached the top 5 when it reached the $50 mill mark...it still hasnt reached #1 but can still be considered a huge hit...

im not disagreeing with that..however, like Joel Segal points out, she performed in that movie..not acted. It was a two hour video...

Dont tell me that her reviews would have been the same if she had to actually convey emotion and reaction with silent expressions...akin to what Glenn Close does at the end of Dangerous Liasons..Or what Sissy Spaceck does throught all of In The Bedroom...

Im not denying that Madonna cant perform and mugg her way through a good show..But act? no no no!

Here are a few quotes by critics about Madonna in 'Evita'...

"It's a relief to say that Alan Parker's film, which opens on Christmas day,is pretty damn fine,WELL CAST and handsomely visualized.Madonna once again confounds our expectations. She does a tough score proud.Lacking the vocal vigor of Elaine Paige's West End Evita,Madonna plays Evita with a poignant weariness. She has more than just a bit of star quailty.Love or hate Madonna, she is a magnet for all eyes. You must watch her.---Richard Corliss,Time magazine.

"Two thumbs up"---Siskel and Ebert

"Unforgettable"---ABC-TV (New York)

"One of the year's ten best films"---The Boston Globe

There was even talk of the Academy Awards nominating Madonna!! Considering this (and the success she had with those other four films),I think it's safe to say that, despite her occasional flops,Madonna is more of an established actress than Bjork.

But having said that,I still think Maddy should chill for awhile and only do movies where she is playing a smaller, supporting role.Currently, she's gettiing ready to play a small role in a film that co-stars Don Johnson and Debbie Harry. That's a smart move for her.

and other's comments:

RollingStone

"Evita" attempts to revive two things long thought dead: Madonna's acting career and the movie musical. For Madonna, it's close but no cigar. The hard-working diva brings star quality but little dramatic focus to the working-class Eva Peron.

But while it's on the screen, the movie flows over you. In a casting gamble as dicey as this oddball's box office chances, Madonna plays Eva Peron, the Argentinian first lady whose shrewdly stage-managed sack time helped take her from rags to President Juan Peron's riches. An able clotheshorse who can sing, Madonna struts the duds and sometimes even sells the homogenized Tim Rice-Andrew Lloyd Webber score.

Salon
there's a decent little movie trapped inside "Evita," struggling to make itself felt beneath Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's operatic score. Watching it, I felt my hand twitch reflexively, reaching for a volume control that it will never find — at least not until "Evita" comes out on video and can be viewed at its best, with the sound turned all the way down.

This is an accomplishment as far as it goes, and it might go further were she not one-upped by Antonio Banderas. The Spanish hunk, whose Hollywood career has stalled on a litany of theater-clearers, exudes star presence in a relatively subsidiary role as the film's ubiquitous "commentator," Che. He steals the picture not only from Madonna but also from Jonathan Pryce as Juan, this normally estimable actor being mostly distinguished here by superb forehead makeup.

theres always two sides to a coin wink

But having said that,I still think Maddy should chill for awhile and only do movies where she is playing a smaller, supporting role.Currently, she's gettiing ready to play a small role in a film that co-stars Don Johnson and Debbie Harry. That's a smart move for her.

don johnson and debbie harry? smart choice? :O

Hey,what's wrong with Debbie Harry? I love her!! smile

I said it was a "smart choice" for Maddy because, this time, she will be playing a small role in a film. She won't have to "carry" this movie all by herself and if it flops, she won't have to unfairly take most of the blame...lol...

Sounds like it's gonna be a smaller,independent-type film too, which are the types of films Maddy should be doing (in order to gain credibility as an actress).
