Next to that, the attempts of Rick James trying to mix funk / R&B with rock sound dated and oldfashioned.

He isnt a very good songwriter, and his music mostly sounds halfbaken and unfinished. Nothing more.

Bands like Living Colour (no, they arent a rockband only, have you ever listened to their albums?), Urban dance squad and Fishbone, definately pee all over Rick James clumsily, old fashioned music.

So, wake up, and try to realisize what is happening.

'Street Songs' sounds half-baked and unfinished?? confuse Whatever, dude.

Ha! I called the album "Ghettto Life" I would retitle it as such if I edited out that horrendous "Fire & Desire". razz

I've been thru the shit with riverpoet over Ben Harper and we're pretty much cool. Technically he said "The morons here who think that Living colour was 'just' a black rock band, you are just wrong". Which is a lot like using the N* word. I know he ain't talking to me cuz LC does so much more than funk or rock. cool

For the record, hamhocks and fatback are greasy meats I just don't eat. razz

My real problem with his argument is that when you put the "crossover" modifier in the mix, I fail to see how one could discount Rick James in favor of Living Colour. This is because "crossover" implies commercial success, and Rick enjoyed more than LC. How Riverpoet misses this in his own thread is beyond me.

If you want to discuss the merits of the two acts, then we could do that and R/P would have a decent argument. This is also not to say that LC didn't cut a wide swath stylistically. But his position is weakened based on the way he himself framed the debate.

By the way, didn't nobody say that you ATE greasy meats, we just can't TELL you they're greasy.

"pimp and opportunistic person to really impress." What does that have to do with the music.
the guts to write down thoughtprovoking lyrics, "

What do you think "Street Songs" is about. You need to dig a little deeper on Rick before you dismiss him because he partied too much.

The genre was called "Funk/Rock"

How come Rick James--the king of Funk and Roll ain't on there? He might not be the obvious choice but I would say he falls into this category. He was doing it this before it became "popular" (i.e. crossed over).

To put it simple. Rick James doesnt sound timeless, he was to much a pimp and opportunistic person to really impress.

At least, bands like Living Colour and Urban Dance Squad had the guts to write down thoughtprovoking lyrics, to express themselves in their music, sorry but Rick James was just to dumb and drugaddicted to ever make a difference...

Dude you need to go to school and learn about RnB, Funk and Rock and where they meet.

You have made some of the most ridiculous statement imaginable.

Funkateers can't be narrowminded in their taste in music. How could anyone be a Funkadelic fan and be narrowminded.

When you say Rick was a disco artist (WTF) Was he only recording music in the 70's (LOL)

Old Kool and the Gang before they went RnB is about as hard core funk as you can get.

You really have no idea.

Notices a lot of the so called "funkateers" seem to have a rather narrowminded taste in music.

Sorry to say, but its what i see in here.
