BATTLE OF THE FUNKY FAMILIES: The Isley Brothers vs. The Jackson 5/Jacksons

Arguably the two most established and admired music siblings groups in soul music, both The Isley Brothers (the 3+3 era) and The Jackson 5/Jacksons made their distinguished runs concurrently (1970s through early 1980s).

The question is simple: If you could listen to one group only (both recorded music and live) in their primes, which funky family would you take and why?

CAVEAT: In this thread, Michael Jackson's and Jermaine Jackson's solo careers are NOT considerations -- only their careers singing with their brothers. And for those who really want to go out of pocket, Janet Jackson's career is not a factor to any degree.

No comparison, I'm sorry.

The Isley's by a long shot. The Jacksons were nice, but they are always teeny boppers to me. The Isley's "3 + 3" is a monumental LP.

I have to go with the isleys on this one for the simple fact that from 1973
to 1984 with the exception of two albums the isleys were on fire. They could shift effortlessly between the uptempo jams and slow jams. All of the isley albums but two in between this period you could just drop the needle on the record and go in the kitchen and make a grilled cheese sandwich without
skipping a song. The jacksons had some good albums between this period but they didn't have the depth that a lot of the isley albums had during this period.

You kidding, right Najee? eek

Ernie Isley ALONE could wipe the whole Jackson family's nostrils outta the universe, let alone counting his brothas with him.

Its an unfair comparision and I bet you knew the result looooong before you posted this thread wink lol

C'mon, now. Why would a lifelong Isley Brothers fan do that? biggrin biggrin

I liked The Jackson 5/The Jacksons, but like phunkdaddy said The 3+3 era saw The Isley Brothers put out string of monster albums -- "3+3," "Live It Up," "The Heat Is On," "Harvest for the World," "Go for Your Guns" and "Showdown." Even the comparatively weaker albums "Winner Takes All" and "Go All the Way" were better than most of The Jacksons' albums.

Honestly, I wouldn't call The Jackson 5/The Jacksons an easy target. The intent was to take the two prominent family acts in soul music (particularly since they share some commonalities) and pair them up in a "choose me" thread.

Through their totally rocked-out and soul-sanctified covers of white rock, Isleys got me listening to Eric Burdon & War with "Spill The Wine" (up til this time I thought War began and ended as a band of local homeys in East & So Central and all through the South Bay), Bob Dylan with "Lay Lady Lay", CSN with "Love the One You're With" and Y with "Ohio" and, of course Jimi with everything Ernie Isley ever laid down.

Really, though, what more is there to say except "Summer Breeze"?

Jacksons got me some really cute kisses, hugs and grinds with "The Love You Save" and "Maybe Tomorrow", but I got full-blown road-head and motel sex off my 1976 Isleys lovetape. Ron Isley will get a brotha laid!

Miles

The Jacksons were a good funky soul group, but, as others have said, the Isleys are a musical insitution, stretching back to the 1950s.

I'm a little different from some other posters, it seems, re. the Isleys, as I really dig the most the 'It's Your Thing', 'Keep On Doin' funk rock era of the Isleys (1968-'71-ish), and I also, sacreligiously perhaps, happen to prefer their beautiful, elegant '60s original of 'Who's That Lady' smile cool, to the slick,'70s remake, partly as I don't particularly dig Ernie Isley's guitar tone on his solo there geek - too processed and smooth for my ears.

MJ was a good singer with the Jacksons, but again Ronald Isley is/was one of the great voices of soul imo, and the Isley harmonies were always great.

So, Isleys all round then. smile

Najee, why are you making me choose?! biggrin

Uh...

I love BOTH groups and both of them are musical institutions (Isleys since the '50s and Jacksons since the '60s).

For historic value (and also for the fact that no other group translated from doo-wop to Motown to funk to contemporary soul better than they did in fifty years), I'll go for the Isleys recording wise.

Performance wise though? I give that up to Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, Michael and Randy but they were a great recording group too.

So it's tied with me. wink I'll say this though: Michael is one of the greatest all-around entertainers of all time and Ron is one of the greatest singers of all time. Both Ernie and Tito are bad-ass guitarists (who also wear funky-ass clothing lol ). Randy and Chris Jasper are great keyboardists. Jermaine and Marvin are great bassists. And Jackie & Marlon are like Kelly and Rudy.

Two generations of family groups who actually have a lot of similarities, odd, huh? lol

The Isley Brothers by far. Their funk was so hard, it was damn near rock.

In some instances, some of the Isley Brothers songs WERE rock ("That Lady", "Tell Me When You Need It Again", their covers of "Spill the Wine", "Summer Breeze" and "Love the One You're With", "Lay-Away").

I go far to say they WERE a rock band as well as a funk band and a disco band (in the late-'70s) as well as a soul band and a doo-wop group. They were a lot of things during their incarnations even if their incarnations never gave them as much success as their 3+3 period did.
