No Real Sexiness The so called R&B Divas of today are a sham in comparison to what true sexuality is supposed to be. When i look @ pictures of Chaka and Betty Davis in the 70's they exude raw unabashed sexuality in it's truest form. These were sisters you know were gettin down hard.
Now we have the Beyonce's, Rhianna's, Ciara,s etc, etc. Little girls who look like they don't even know what their vagina looks like. It's disgusting to me as a woman to see these young ladies represent sexuality in this day and age. It's vapid, superficial and artificial with no real bite and steam. When you see, Vanity, Appollonia, Jayne Kennedy,Betty Davis, Chaka, Pam Grier, just to name a few, they all had sexuality pour from their skin, now it's forced and it's really another form of baffonery if you ask me. Especially when i see sister shaking their ass and weaves and arching their backs on a magazine cover, then all of a sudden they are a sex siren. It's gross and it devalues the purity of sexuality as a whole. Just my 2 cents, Orger's let's discuss.

Miss Grier can STILL raise some madhouse hell @ the age of 58
I agree, its the attitude that makes it sexy. If its natural,,,,its more effective. Mae West did some hell raising in her heyday without even jumping up and down a storm, which again it all boils down to attitude. Aaliyah was the ONLY one from the young generation who oozed sexuality without being upfront about it, which in her case its mystique ALONG with attitude. So there you go; mystique to let the imagination flowing,,,and attitude to put a lasting impression. I don't really knock these young girls today, but I can tell that its a bunch of fakery, which is their OWN toothache to deal with.

Agreed. There ain't one chick in R&B right now that I find attractive. They're just little girls playing a role they don't understand. The only real exception would be Kelis. In all honesty, I think our society is oversexed. You see something that's sexual, and it doesn't even make a dent in your psyche because we're bombarded with (coerced) images of sexuality all day every day. Most of the artists out there on major labels are forced to play some part that usually doesn't represent who they are, and for whose benefit? We've already GOT a Beyonce, why do we need a thousand other women trying to be her? And that's what it boils down to, TRYING to be. Like you said Harl, sexuality is most effective when it's NATURAL, and I don't believe a word that any of these pop tarts sing about sex, because it's clear that it's not natural.

Well its true mainly because there is someone steering alot of these ladies and males too (they aint sexy either) on how to look, dress, etc.. and alot of the times its the same desingers doing the same things with the same people, so its hard to figure out who is who. As PRINCE said Sexiness is in the mind and its what we get from it and when its thrown in your face, its not the same. Granted there are sexy looking females and males, but its more of image, there are very few that carry themselves that way day to day, off the top of my head Mariah Carey would be one of the only ones i can think of in that way and in terms of RB, though many dont feel the same way, Amerie clearly has this quality. She has that classic soul look of a Diana Ross, but she is almost never seen in this country because we are too busy with Ciara . In terms of the males, well, lets be real, i have never heard any lady speak about any male singer the way they would speak about Marvin and im not talking vocals, im talking about appeal. So like someone was saying about the warmth of VINYL, i agree with that, but i think its a combo of alot of things. Akon or R kelly may think they are sexy when they sing "i wanna fuck you" but you cant even put that on the same map as Marvin singing "Lets get it On" and look he didnt have to be "dirty" to get his point across.
I know most of you will disagree, but in this era, these two ladies would be in a "overall SEXY Class" "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

I do think Mariah and Amerie have the kind of sex appeal missing in today's singers though I can SEE why some people would discredit MC, lol. Toni Braxton had it at one point but then pretended that she had to strip in order to "be sexy" and that's certainly not true! But other than that, none of the women out now have that sex appeal that made Diana Ross who she was, that made the woman Harley posted who she was, or any one of them that had what the ladies of the past had.

I know most of you will disagree, but in this era, these two ladies would be in a "overall SEXY Class" I think Mariah is many things now, but one of them isn't sexy. Sure, she's got the legs and the fake tits and the fake stringy blonde hair with the center part (change your hair, woman!), but the chick still acts like she's a 10-year-old playing dress-up in her hooker mom's closet. She doesn't have the attitude or the panache to carry off the look and so it's painful to watch her prance about in her nouveau riche couture. She was sexy when she covered up, kept her hair natural (her hair was perfect when it was healthy, brunette and curly) and didn't put everything on display. She had true beauty and class until about 1997. Then she inflated her tits, bleached that shit to oblivion, got some more rhinoplasty and some Botox, posed for the Rainbow album cover wearing hotpants and sucking on a lollipop, and turned into a walking parody. I don't care what Mariah says, it isn't natural for her in the least and she needs to realize it. The Loverboy video is so unsexy it's ridiculous. Mariah in the back of the car in the Emotions video? That's sexy. Amerie has some natural sensuality, I admit. I like her the best out of the current faceless women the industry likes to churn out. [Edited 11/16/07 9:45am]

I agree Toni is another that has it. I think the thing that has changed is just the way things are marketed and pushed, and i dont think it really would be different if say Diana came out today and was breaking in to the industry she would be steered in that direction too. I think it was a combination of alot of things, not just the "person" is to blame. But its everything from song production, to the way videos are shot, to just the general fashions that are out there. Like everything else it almost becomes a "been there seen that" attitude, i think alot of artists back in the 80's pushed the envelope of sex appeal and just how much freedom you could have that the decades following have just been an attempt to really OUTSHOCK rather than to OUTCLASS. There are thousands of pretty girls and guys out there, but there is a difference between being pretty or goodlooking than to having a natural Sex Appeal. The ladies that are out today don't have "sex appeal", a true state of being. They have what I call "fuck appeal", an act for inducing hard ons.
Anyone can have "fuck appeal" because it's an act. Just add lots of ass shaking and gyrating , skimpy outfits, self touching, too much weave and make up, to sickeningly weak beats and lyrics and you too can have "fuck appeal".

It does kinda seem like today's female artists are more girls parading as women rather the true grown ass women. And they all seem to much like mannaquins that are manufactured to be 'pretty' rather than true natural bombshells If you will, so will I

I agree about Aaliyah. It oozed from her even in her baggy clothes. She passed away at 22 and she still seemed older and more mature than any current RnB artist. Studiotraffic-One of the fastest ways to get payed on the net!

I know most orgers have a love/hate relationship with her music, but to me Alicia Keys exudes alot of sex appeal without really trying to hard. She also has a really classy manner about her, but thats my opinion...
If you will, so will I | |

I also wanted to say, I think marketing is partially to blame because today's artists are reared to sell to a younger more immature audience (I think thats what lastdecember was getting at) If you will, so will I

I'll agree in a heartbeat that she's drop-dead-gorgeous And I'll agree STRONGLY if you say that she's a sexy "hunk" LoL. There are a lot of women, not gay either, that are attracted to Alicia, as well as men of course. Aaliyah had the most sex appeal ever to me, but I think whatever Alicia has is interesting because both sexes like her. Studiotraffic-One of the fastest ways to get payed on the net!

Mariah is sexy, but I think she's guilty of false advertising. All these girls imitate hookers, strippers and porn stars whether they realise it or not, but I don't think any of them are really like that. Beyonce's a Bible basher, Mariah seems frigid, and Christina's actually a nice respectable girl. But the market demands exaggerated sexiness, so these dumb money-chasers gladly up the ante without a second thought. I wouldn't mind if it was genuine, but it's not.
On the other hand you have Britney who genuinely is as loose as her videos imply, but her looseness is only a tragic symptom of her confused state of mind. She's not comfortable enough in her skin to be a convincing sex-pot. She's more like an unconcious robot craving male attention than a genuinely sexual woman. As for Alicia, please. Surely we all know the deal by now, right? “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

The term "middle class church bunny" screams Beyonce's name
She's waaaaay too wholesome to portray her OWN song's character(Nasty Girl). Mariah's the same way too. I'm sick of hearing women using liberation as an excuse to get down and dirty. Its ok, be blunt about it and say "I'm sick of any MATERIAL covering my ass", its ok, we understand

yeah totally what i was going at. Its alot to do with marketing and things like that. Which is why i think had someone like Diana Ross came along today in this media mind set, she would be steered in that direction too. Back in the day there was the NEED to be different, no matter who you were, today many are created to be just like someone else, and im not talking about influences, im talking more about how 90% of rb males are really the same guy, close your eyes and listen to Lloyd and Omarion and tell me the difference. Its not one real reason to blame, its a combo of things like i said, its marketing, its the production of records, its fashion, its the way videos are done, and many more things. I also agree on Teedra Moses too she has that appeal and warmth and sensuality on her records, i also agree on Alicia too. In other genres i would say Jewel has a very quiet mysterious sex appeal to her and some others too, many in the Latin Field, because i view Latin as genre that still respects and pushes its older artists as if they are royality, and they are, sure you have younger artists in Reggaeton and junk like that but in the other Latin fields of music you have a very mature class of Female and Male singers.
