Question about Rihanna's speech..... Last night she won one of the last awards at the American Music Awards in the female R&B category and said something to the effect of "i didn't expect to be nominated in this category". What did she mean by that? I don't know but it came off as stank to me like as if she felt she should be in the pop category. What do you guys think?? Maybe i'm reading into it too deeply but I didn't like her vibe and the way she came across.....

That's why she did that rock thing at the last show. Why do you like playing around with my narrow scope of reality? - Stupify

I really didn't like the way she congradulated her peers in the Soul/R&B award as "other nominees." It's obvious she doesn't like Beyonce but it didn't have to be so careless. I still think Rihanna should have been in the Pop/Rock category and Fantasia should have won the Soul/R&B award since Beyonce is more Pop/Rock.

Why doesn't she do a heavy metal record and just get it over with already if she doesn't want to considered R&B?! It will be very interesting to see what she does musically next because I don't think she wants to be lumped in with R&B.

You just answer you own question correctly. Rihanna is a hip-pop artists that wants to do other genres outside of the boring hip-hop/r&b crisis of FM radio formats. I think music-fans can do without Beyonce-clones for a change.

Madona doesn't need to get the "ok" from anyone to do jack shit when it comes down to her career. Rihanna has a long way to go before coming "the black madonna" as she recently stated. i'm sorry but i don't feel her "rock direction" is genuine. it seems very calculated and like her record company just didn't want her to be compared to Beyonce, hence the new look and sound!

Rihanna hasn't been around as long as Alicia, but she has had as many albums, because she has that DRIVE which is a gift needed to keep making hit after hit.
If you look back at what Rihanna has released for singles, you could say they are pop songs.

do you believe Rihanna was laughing at Britney Spears when she opened for the MTV VMAs this summer? I feel like that may have formed part of your opinion.

Exactly. Not to pile on Rihanna but she isnt this mega-star we think, i know she has constant top10 hits and released 3 albums fairly quick in this generation, but lets not give credit where its not due. I remember when Rihanna went in to do this 3rd record, she said in an interview she said to her label "get me the best songs to do, i wanna be harder edged" well right there its not genuine because you are letting someone else define your "edge". I remember watching those awful MTV awards and seeing her laugh at Britney, and i thought, "why are u laughing? are u better?". Look Rihanna is more of a POP star than anything, she didnt even know who Soft Cell were? I mean there should be a law that if you sample, you have to at least know the hit you have stolen. And also i know some people have said that Rihanna was "smart" for taking on SOS when Christina Milian turned it down. Christina turned it down mainly because she said she didnt wanna do a cover, she felt that song had been done to death already, now we may say that was a dumb decision but i applaud Christina for showing some guts and refusing to do something she didnt want to, and then of course being released from Def Jam because she showed some form of thinking. Rihanna wasnt smart for taking the song, she just didnt want to get the boot too. As for the Madonna comment, she will never be that, and also once again HOW ABOUT BEING YOURSELF, its cool to have influence, but stop saying stupid shit like this the "Black Madonna". I mean i know most of the Org hates on Alicia for copying styles, but at least shes not saying "I'm the female Prince" in interviews, she has absorbed the influence rather than just stating "Im the next...." Gotta disagree, its not all about her having Drive, shes got people writing everything, laying down the tracks for her, all she is doing is going to the studio and singing over it. The only thing i will give her is that she did tour somewhat, but she has almost nothing to do with her career or her music. Sorry folks, but I am completely late to the whole Rihanna phenomenon. She has become an international star now,and I understand the the young kids over here are crazy about her. But lemme ask ya somethin'...I just watched her AMA clips, probably one of the fews times I've taken notice of her live performances, and is it just me, or is she simply just a "Beyoncè-Lite"....
As for that I-wanna-be-the-black-Madonna comment, that chyle needs to go sit her behind down somewhere. One day there might just be some young artist that will take the chances and make the strides comparable to what granmaw Mahagda has, and redefine what it means to be a cultural icon for the 21st century...however, those are pretty big shoes to fill, and I simply don't see her as being "it". She's a cute girl though

Haha, the age old "hip-pop" trap! I once too fell into it, it's a very devious one indeed.
... but y'all seriously need to stop talking so negatively about my future wife.

Just analyze everything she says...
For a forum that says they "hate shit hop music of today" they sure dedicate alot of time to talking about it.

well the fact is,

FarrahMoan said: MsLegs said: True unfortunately. What would you say is the "Unfortunate" part of that post? ...the fact that she gets put in a certain category and, like most black artists, usually ends up stuck there based on the fact that the public seems to think black artist = R&B. If Rihanna were white, she'd be called a pop star.
