I am curious: why? Since Dewrede & I appear to be the contrarians here, i'll give you my reasons until he shows back. I just listened to these songs back-to-back. The thing that immediately came to mind is that although MJ & Jermaine deliver a very professional performance (especially for their ages at the time), it's hard for me to believe individuals that are 12 & 16 years old respectively truly understand the emotional depths of the lyrics they're singing. (I have similar feelings about certain tunes sung by Stacy Lattisaw). For example, when a 12 year old MJ sings, "I'll be there to protect you, with an unselfish love that respects you.", the picture that comes to mind is that he's referring to the love of a puppy (maybe a rodent or whale) as opposed to a woman. It's much more believable on a emotional level being sung by a 22 year old Mariah and a 23 year old Trey Lorenz. Cutting away all my prior psychological b.s., I simply prefer hearing the voices of Mariah/Trey over MJ/Jermaine in this case. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

In the case of Jermaine and Michael, especially when they were young, it could be seen as a song about a family member as opposed to a love interest. I have even heard a gospel interpretation of the song. I like Mariah version too, but like many great, female singers she has a tendency of over singing a song. Whereas in the case of the J5 they just sing it so naturally, yet so beautifully, with out all the vocal somersaults.

How do you know that Mariah is not singing naturally? She sounds just like any other song she's sung up to that point in her career. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. First and foremost it's a J5 song. Mariah did a nice cover, but she never owned the song. On a side note, I never realized that Trey Lorenz was queer as a cat fart. It's funny watching this video years later...

This is a no-brainer. Of course it's the J5 version. Don't even put Mariah's version on that level, please. The lady has no soul, and she oversings as usual.

Mariah Carey is lousy at remakes.I've never liked any of her cover songs. She never takes the song to another level or make you forget the original. Her remakes are dull and uninspired and she sounds like she's just going through the motions
The original version of "I'll Be There" is,quite possibly, one of the greatest songs ever recorded. The production is flawless. It's hard to pick a favorite Jackson Five song but "I'll Be There" would be in my Top Five.
