If i had to just pick one off the top of my head i would say
a-Ha, despite being a worldwide success (70 million in album and single sales) they are still unknown to the USA despite copycat acts getting popular off their sound which they changed from being a synth 80's band to strictly piano vocal guitar in the 90s and till this day. Bands like Colplay,Radiohead,Keane,Snow Patrol etc.. have all mentioned a-Ha as big inlfuences on them and yet no respect.U2 sited their 2000 album Minor Earth Major Sky to be the best of the year said BONO, and the part in Beautiful Day "TOUCH ME" is an homage paid to a-Ha's classic hit "the sun always shines on tv" from 1985. a-Ha got caught in the whole poster boy "looks" phase in the mid 80s and the whole mtv thing, and that diminished them as a REAL BAND to most of this country, but once the 90's rolled in a-Ha rolled out the snyths and the re-verb and got to basics, and are almost like a totally different band. They are currently working on their 9th "studio" album set for mid 2008 release, everywhere but the USA. "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

I'd say GEORGE MICHAEL.
YES he has hits and success but apart from "musicians" most people do not realize how talented he really is as a song writer, arranger, musician and performer. He is another artist I think would be a perfect to record with Prince. BTW...goood points about A-Ha LastDecember!! I agree with you. I also LOVE DURAN DURAN, great artists and musicians! Have you heard of the UK band BLUE OCTOBER?? Check em out ASAP! Dad. Cartoonist. Illustrator. TOPPS Star Wars and Walking Dead Illustrator. Film Illustrator. JEDI. PRINCE Fan. www.theartofprince.com

He's sold over 80 million albums worldwide, 32 Top 10 UK singles (11 #1 singles), 21 Top 10 USA singles (11 #1 singles), 3 American Music Awards, 3 Brit Awards, 2 Grammy Awards, 1 MTV Europe Award, 3 MTV VMAs. But people still see him either as: The guy from Wham! The "Faith" guy He's so much more than that [Edited 11/20/07 15:12pm] "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. If it's the most underrated artist in the world, then none of us have probably ever heard of him/her. "Half of what I say is meaningless; but I say it so that the other half may reach you." - Kahlil Gibran

why, prince fcuz!
laughed at and ridiculed since he first emerged on the music scene in 1979 and eventho he's wildly appreciated amongst fans and musicians i think the general public don't know 95% of his output and remember him solely for an incredibly small number of songs. before the superbowl, and probably even still after, most people think prince recorded purple rain and kiss and he never did anything worthwhile after that. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

the blowmonkeys (and the singers solo work as Dr Roberts) deserved much more attention.
though the american artist - color theory (aka brian hazard) makes the most beautiful piano/synth music that hardly anyone has ever heard, gorgeous lyrics and a beautiful voice much like martin gore of depeche mode fame or marc almond from soft cell. www.colortheory.com (has many samples - just check out heart like a doll - beautiful) i also do agree about the prince thing...many people just dont know the excellent things hes done, but their loss i guess - he's still famous, so its just those who dont know who are losing out. Wouldn't you love to love me?

Ani Difranco.... amazing guitarist, awesome lyrics, great songs.. owns her label, never has given in to mainstream media. Refused to sing another song on Letterman when Subdivision was deemed to controversial.
People talk about Dave Matthews on guitar as something great, but listen to her stuff and she makes him look like a little boy. I remember seeing her with her head shaved in a guitar mag early 90's, touting her ability. She keeps growing as an artist and still few know who she is. I don't know about in the world or ever, but within the past few years...
...Lewis Taylor would get my vote. Superb songwriter/arranger/instrumentalist along with pretty soulful vocals in the Pop/Rock/R&B category. A one man band type cat. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

Without a doubt, it's Prince...
We know, but the world doesn't. The man is what dreams are made of musically. Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Yeah, Prince just played the Superbowl. Really underrated artist if you ask me, I mean it's not like every unsigned artist doesn't get invited to play the Supwerbowl on a constant basis. David Bowie? Geez, being the richest British musician must be a drag.
