They had their greatest success after leaving the label and going to CBS and in fact were very public in their frustration with Motown. I'm pretty sure you meant to seperate The Delfonics, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, The O'Jays, The Stylistics and The Three Degrees as part of the Philly Soul Sound (also, let's not forget MSFB and The Spinners). Also, The Jacksons recorded their first two post-Motown albums with Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff at the helm. THE TRAFFIC JAMMERS, The Org's house band: VAINANDY -- lead singer; NAJEE -- bass; THE AUDIENCE -- guitar; PHUNKDADDY -- rhythm guitar; ALEX de PARIS -- keyboards; Da PRETTYMAN -- keyboards; FUNKENSTEIN -- drums. HOLD ON TO YOUR DRAWERS!

They had their greatest success after leaving the label and going to CBS and in fact were very public in their frustration with Motown. I guess so, but their non-support and eventual rejection by Motown is an important part of Black rock history. That's a whole 'nuther topic altogether. let's not forget ... The Spinners). Also, The Jacksons recorded their first two post-Motown albums with Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff at the helm. Both had hits under the Motown and the Philly Soul sounds. I absolutely love them both, Motown was a huge movement, and it's hard to choose, but if I had a loaded pistol to my head and had to pick... I'd say Motown. But Gamble & Huff were absolutely incredible! When I listen to songs like 'Stairway To Heaven', it makes it hard to choose, but sense my favorite artist Slick Rick was on Motown, that tips the scale. Lady Cab Driver is one of the greatest songs ever!

I vote for the 4 horsemen of Motown: Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, & Rick James.

Motown ruled the 60s. Philly ruled the 70s. both had their own decade of R&B dominance But only for the manufactured group sound. The Philly Sound took control of the game from the Motown Sound, but two Motown guys in the '70s (Marvin and Stevie) changed the game altogether. Motown had artists like Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson and so on Philly Soul had Teddy Pendergrass, Phyllis Hyman, The O-Jays and so on. Philly had the best sound in the 70's... But Motwon had the best talent ever... Hard to imagine black music without stevie, Rick, Smockey, Michael, Diana, DeBarge Gladys Knight and Marvin etc...

I adore TSOP but Motown tips the scales for me
All that talent on one label in the 60's and everybody kicked ass whether singer, songwriter or producer in such a unique collective effort - will never see that again

Neither. Both had some great music but I prefer something harder like either the Solar Sound, The Minneapolis Sound, or the Ohio Sound. Andy is a four letter word.
