FarrahMoan I thought of you because I got to watch some of Alicia Keys unplugged set for the first time over the weekend. Okay, you may be right. I don’t follow her much so I thought she was more tomboy than butch and folks were exaggerating. At least tomboy you can possibly grow out of. Maybe that’s why she overdoes it with the makeup? Anyway, I still think she has an appeal but her mannerisms remind me of a guy named Claude. I like that you call Pam a goddess because that’s what I think of her as. I remember being so surprised that she had cancer several years back and that gave me a new respect for her. I wish she was in more movies because she deserves to be on the big screen. It has been replaced with slutty and angry. For an artist, sexy is more than how you look but also what you emote. If you think about it, the songs today are anything but sexy. Many female artists look pretty and sound angry. You can't be singing about how a man can't touch you and be trying to look hot. The two cancel each other out. People like Bey are attractive but her songs don't send a "sexy" message but rather that of a duality that can be confusing. The same is the case for most pop stars of today; attractive with an attitude (Monica & Kelly R.). Artists like Rihanna have the looks (a little bit) but are unconvincing in the delivery. Then you have the Myas (crazy, thug chasers) and the Ameries and Teedras (sound good but are too busy displaying vocal ability to be sexy) and the Alicias who come off as contrived whenever they try to be sexy. I'm sorry, Alicia is very pretty but far from sexy. Even with all of the flaws of the above mentioned artists and their types; (whoops, almost forgot the unskilled cuties like Ashanti and Cassie) they themselves are not the reason that sexiness is nonexistent in music these days. Labels/Corporations have effectively bred sexiness out of our culture in general. Much in the same way that strip clubs replaced burlesque, the media had bred out the tease of sexiness for the sleaze of overt vulgarity and self-indulgence. Most everything made in entertainment is made to feed the ego. Movies are dumbed down to make people feel smart and sensual has been turned to sexual for instant gratification. Such is also the case with music. People refuse to be teased nowadays because we have become such an "instant society" that we expect immediate satisfaction. The entertainment industry has one philosophy - give it to them. When enough people do it, it becomes commonplace and the art of subtlety is lost. Its quite simple - these artists don't know how to be naturally subtle. They have no one to teach them.

I don't know why anyone would argue that Alicia is NOT a lesbian. What's wrong with being a lesbian? No one is arguing that the sky is NOT blue! Although I understand the difference it makes to a large part of our society still, and the impact it could have on her career. What i do not understand is why do people say she is a lesbian? Is everyone going on the fact that she rarely talks about her private life & the look she had when her career first started? If people are going by that then rumors is all it ever will be. I could not care less about her sex life at all. Bi or gay that is her choice. She is attrative & can look sexy at times.

For conveying allure while maintaining dignity, I would add
Natalie Merchant, Norah Jones, and Tracy Chapman all of whom are marketed as adult contemporary or alternative... The notion that there is a thoughtful, even socially aware, artistic mind behind that pretty face has strong drawing appeal for us older types, I guess. [Edited 11/20/07 5:07am]

Rhianna is a very beautiful girl but she's like what...18?...19?...she's just starting to own her sexiness. She'll be plenty sexy once she's 25 but she's just not there yet. I don't know what Beyonce's problem is though. maybe that has to do with her dad being her manager. Exactly. I'm sure if I was 15 I'd be drooling over Rihanna and Ciara, but I'm not, so I don't. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

Also i dont post about her because being here in NYC i have known Norah and her band for almost a decade now, my first encounter was way back in 1998 when she wasnt even signed and selling her demo at the show for 5 bucks, 4 years later those demo cds were selling on ebay for 250 dollars. There is nothing like seeing her in a small club here in NYC, which i have done a dozen times at least, gives U hope for artists. Now we have the Beyonce's, Rhianna's, Ciara,s etc, etc. Little girls who look like they don't even know what their vagina looks like. It's disgusting to me as a woman to see these young ladies represent sexuality in this day and age. It's vapid, superficial and artificial with no real bite and steam. When you see, Vanity, Appollonia, Jayne Kennedy,Betty Davis, Chaka, Pam Grier, just to name a few, they all had sexuality pour from their skin, now it's forced and it's really another form of baffonery if you ask me. Especially when i see sister shaking their ass and weaves and arching their backs on a magazine cover, then all of a sudden they are a sex siren. It's gross and it devalues the purity of sexuality as a whole. Just my 2 cents, Orger's let's discuss. did appollonia and vanity both show their breast.. beyonce, rhianna and ciara has NOT... I rather see someone do that then show their breast and walk around in lingerie... and act like a ditz.. you are an old guy... so YOU should not think these young women are sexy.... young guys find these girls sexy.... NOT old men

All these girls imitate hookers, strippers and porn stars whether they realise it or not, but I don't think any of them are really like that. Beyonce's a Bible basher, Mariah seems frigid, and Christina's actually a nice respectable girl. But the market demands exaggerated sexiness, so these dumb money-chasers gladly up the ante without a second thought. I wouldn't mind if it was genuine, but it's not.
On the other hand you have Britney who genuinely is as loose as her videos imply, but her looseness is only a tragic symptom of her confused state of mind. She's not comfortable enough in her skin to be a convincing sex-pot. She's more like an unconcious robot craving male attention than a genuinely sexual woman. As for Alicia, please. Surely we all know the deal by now, right? what is that mister???? I don't care if she is one.. you are right mister... all are an illusion... we can post real pics of all of these women without make up.. and those cute cloths.. and they would look like a normal girl... we have all seen the before and after pics of these women.. so lets not get carried away about how "beautiful" they are.... she looks nothing like her photoshop pics (and i know you guys have seen mariah's pics w/out make-up) last thing.. alicia keys is pretty but she is not sexy.... I have seen girls who are sexy but not that pretty.... Alicia keys is now trying to be sexy.. but its just not working... she is wearing her hair out and wearing lil dresses... its not necessarily about having your boobs out, wearing skimmy dresses... its attitude.. and a lot of artist are more "slutty" then "sexy" and i truely believe people today do NOT know the meaning of "sexy" they confuse it with girls who act like bimbos and dress "skanky"...

Heather Headley is super sexy to me. She's gorgeous, has written some awesome songs on her albums, and has a phenomenal voice. Truly one of the most underrated artists at the moment IMO.
Shanice is also in the same category of sexy for me and she's had two babies. (Britney, take some notes). I don't define 'sexy' as how scantily-clad someone is, because if that was the case, than all hookers and strippers would be sexy and I've seen many that are just down-right FUGLY. If a woman can be fully dressed, without constantly having to wear loads of weave and other artificial helpers, than I call them sexy. And YESSS, Aaliyah does fit in that category of "REAL SEXINESS". Very good songs IMO Aaliyah was skinny, but I think that's what I find soo sexy about her. She didn't have to have 'Beyonce/J.Lo curves". She seemed comfortable in her skin and her personality shined through, something I find to be very sexy because she didn't come off as being fake to me. Shanice is still rockin' it, right?
