Slow Jam of the Day: "You Are My Starship" by Norman Conners

This has got to be one of my favorite slow jams of all time. Anybody into this one?

Ah yes! I love that spacey production on this track and Michael Henderson is at his very best here as well, laying down those solid, yet gentle basslines. One of my favorite late night, slow jams!

"Cause you are my starship
Come take me up tonight
And don't be late

Yes, you are my starship
Come take me up tonight
And don't be late
And don't you come too soon"

I couldn't have given a better description. It definately has a spacey feel to it and late night slow jams are the only type of slow jams I like.

I think Rick James did a cover of this song back in '94 or 95 for his best of anthology, if i'm not mistaken!?

He did. Rick's version sounded horrible though. It had a 90s feel to it and I hate the 90s.

It was an alright rendition to it, but Norman's version is the best. Rick's version was kinda botched mainly because of his voice! lol

Ahh, memories. Reminds me of listening to late night radio, sitting in the back seat of my brother-in-law's ride, puffing on a giant pink (rolled in Strawberry papers) joint, back in the late 70's. The vibe was magical. I wish I could ride those radio waves, on that thick cloud of smoke, all the way back to those days. Great Song / Fun Times.

I was supriced to hear that Phyllis Hyman was a last-minute replacement when he couldn't get Jean Carne.

Can you imagine that? Nothing against Ms.Carne whom I think is a BEAST of a vocalist,,,,but I couldn't imagine anybody else sinkin' their teeth into this beside Phyllis. Hell, I think her version rips the original to shreds anytime.

Oh yes, LOVE the whole album,,,,,but this is my fave from him:

He was @ his FUNKIEST in that album,,,and he gained more confidence with his own singin' voice(which ain't 1/2 bad at all) music

I agree. Rick's version was horrible. Michael Henderson did an amazing job on this track. I have several of his albums on cd. They are all decent.

I remember hearing that jam when it first dropped in the early 70's. And the amazing thing about it, the lyrics and groove still have that mellow slow groove. I would've loved to heard this song live. I heard back in the Normon would duet this song along with his fellow Philly native Phyllis Hyman who toured with him.

whistle " Yes You are my starship. Come take me up tonight and don't be late. And don't you come too soon".

nod I heard her rendition of the song. She gave it a great shot but she couldn't light a candle to the late great Phyllis Hyman' version.

The name of the album was time traveler. It was an album of new r&b material and a little bit of jazz. Go to yahoo or spun.com and see if you can track it down. I haven't heard the whole album but i know you probably are thinking it sold out to shit hop. lol
I meant amazon or spun.com
