Here's a little story on how this song was first brought out by the two Motown legends who recorded it.

"When I'm Gone" was originally supposed to be put out by Mary Wells and was to be the follow-up to "My Guy" since the songs were similar, however, Mary got into a dispute with Berry Gordy over royalty disputes and left Motown as a result. Brenda Holloway was recently signed to the label around this time at just the age of 18 and her biggest claim to fame up until that point was "Every Little Bit Hurts", which reached the top twenty of the Billboard Hot 100. After Mary's departure, Motown wanted Brenda, positioned to fill in Mary's spot as the female solo star of Motown, but Brenda had difficulty with that position and felt as if she was given leftovers rather than the label allowing her to write and produce her own stuff. Regardless, Brenda's version became a hit for her and I think it's the only version that's been on the charts reaching number twelve R&B and number twenty five pop in the early winter of '65.
