I can only listen to that performance, Im glad she went 'ghetto fab' instead of this straight up street look she was trying on. It's also around the time she discovered "Aaliyah", its amazing how much of an influence she had on Mariah vocally, sound considering Mariah doesnt seem influnced by anyone new.

it's interesting because a lot of people never noticed that, or deny it Aaliyah's remake of At Your Best was the main influence behind Mariah's Underneath The Stars, in Mariah's words herself.

I never thought about the Aaliyah connection but that's definitely something to consider. Underneath the Stars was one of my fave songs. Just simple and sweet. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

Mariah also has a version of Love To Love You Baby, that she did live awhile back that is almost impossible to find. "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

I was about 2 post this but didnt know what version I liekd better..this is a better sounding version, but the other one without a video was tighter. http://youtube.com/watch?v=IgON0Y2S1A4 I was glad she worked with Jimmy & Terry for a while and still working with James Poyser if not them....she is a big fan of theirs. I think she could do a killer version of it. Aaliyah's remake of At Your Best was the main influence behind Mariah's Underneath The Stars, [url]in Mariah's words herself and the 'One a million' album was a major influence on the butterfly album, she worked with Missy after hearing that album (First time I heard that album someone asked me to describe it and I said lazily it sounded a bit like Aaliyah) and she toned down her production and vocals, I think she said Aaliyah sounded 'angelic' on 'at your best'and was in her top 10 songs on itunes, and she started to 'whisper/sing' and she was trying to rock an Aaliyah look in the 'Honey remix video' , . Anyway, the Aaliyah look was all the rage back in 96/97 among the sistas.. Not to mention Coko's cheetah nails... I don't know what I was thinkin' when I thought I was in with those nails,,,,,GHETTO, chile thats what I think now

to MC's credit she so talented she has rocked so many different 'soul' sounds and has the versatility vocally to go from taking on 'Whitney' to Aaliyah to chasing Alicia Keys on 'Mimi album', whatever is 'hot' in R&B she can write and sing something in that sub genre and take your style and make it her own somehow
!!Aaliyah's look was HOT! She always had a sexy 'Sade' thing about her look. And you know what, I seen those SWV nails recently, I think they making a 'high' fashion comeback, retro 90's coming!

I heard Mariah was trying to work with her...the fact Mariah went out of her way to write for someone speaks volume, when have you heard of Mariah wanting to write or even agree to write for another singer??? never, she keeps her stuff for herself, and she has said basically she will write/produce for others when her own 'pop' career winds down, and I think the story was, Aaliyah didnt even ask her, she just wrote some songs 'for her especially in mind' and sent them to her. shows how much of a fan she was.

i'm DYING to know if Aaliyah got to record them or not. Yep! She and Damizza wrote couple of stuff for her. One of the songs don't have much production, just fender rhodes, vibes and celeste making a focus ON babygirl's voice. I haven't heard the shit but the song's description is just ooooh Is anybody fimiliar with Aaliyah's version of "Ava Maria"? OOOMG

. [Edited 11/10/07 21:38pm] Wow, I had no idea they even associated with one another. While I've always loved Mariah, I guess she has sort of moved into the space left by Aaliyah as an artist I like not just for their talent but for their personality. I would love to hear those songs someday. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

She even stuck by him when everyone took Jay's side when they fell out, and one of the reasons she went to Def Jam.
