James Brown is the MAN forever and ever. I'm amazed that he released the tons of material he did release. Makes his "hardest-working man in show biz" title even more prevalent. biggrin

JB is definitely the man! I still can't believe he never got a #1 pop hit (for what it's worth). Anyway, I want to make a small correction:

LittleBLUECorvette said:

-He is tied with Louis Jordan, Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin (17) for most number one records on the R&B charts.

Actually, Stevie Wonder is #1 alone with 19 (or 20) #1 hits

    1. Fingertips
    2. Uptight (Everything's Alright)
    3. Blowin' in the Wind
    4. I Was Made to Love Her
    5. Shoo-Be-Doo-Be-Doo-Da-Day
    6. Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours
    7. Superstition
    8. Higher Ground
    9. Living for the City
    10. You Haven't Done Nothin'
    11. Boogie On Reggae Woman
    12. I Wish
    13. Sir Duke
    14. Master Blaster (Jammin')
    15. That Girl
    16. I Just Called to Say I Love You
    17. Part-Time Lover
    18. Skeletons
    19. You Will Know

If you count "That's What Friends Are For," it would be an even 20.

Yeah I think they credit "That's What Friends Are For" because some articles mention the 20. They don't credit him for "We Are the World" so I guess "Friends..." was easier to give him credit since he played harmonica and had a great verse in there. biggrin

In that essence, they're second place among male artists who reach number-one:

Stevie (20)
James (17)
Louis (17)
Marvin (13)
Michael (13)

These are the TOP FIVE male R&B artists with most number-ones. biggrin

Out of all JB's hits, I can't believe Sex Machine didn't go number 1 on the charts. I wonder what was number one at that time, June 1970n is when it charted, so probably a Jackson 5 record.

I think you may be correct.

And you know the most oddest thing about it is that it's his most popular tune, even popular than "I Feel Good" nowadays and THAT was his biggest charter on the pop charts (#3)!

nod Yeah, because I think that song was released that May. But I forget the month it hit number-one though if in fact it was around June but I do know the Jacksons were dominating that year.

Actually, I think I was wrong. My booklet from Star Time says "Sex Machine" was released in July 1970. "The Love You Save" was already #1 at that point. The likely culprits are the #1 songs through August and September: Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours" (6 weeks) and Aretha Franklin's "Don't Play That Song" (3 weeks). Damn, that was a fantastic year, wasn't it?

I think it might have been The Love You Save. My JB 50th Anniversary booklet says Sex Machine was released in June of 70 (Alan Leeds needs to get up on his info) lol

Love You Save was number one for 6 weeks from June 20 to July 25 and Signed Sealed Delivered, from August 1st to September 26. It was one of those two songs, no doubt.
