Let the Artist Grow, stop putting a timetable on everything Lets be real, a classic album comes over time, the first time you listen to a record it may blow you away, but it being a classic comes with time and a test of time, like being able to pull it out 20 years later and even caring about it. And thats the way singers/performers/artists should be, and why not we do the same thing with Actors and Actresses. I mean take a great Actor like Tom Hanks and then look at the shitty movies he did early on, ex. "The Man with one red shoe" did anyone look at this guy and say, damn thats a future classic actor? No way and if they did, they were lying or HIGH. So let the artists grow, and just work on their craft, stop BUYING into this HYPE MACHINE that is put out by the media. Im tired of hearing "the next this and the next that" but im also tired of people whining about not being blown away when they hear an artist that has been HYPED. look Hype is nothing more than Marketing its a tool, just like tight jeans is a tool to show off an ass. I can run down the list of HYPE artists, everyone from John Mayer to John Legend to Alicia to Joss to bands like the Killers, but lets remember they arent creating it themselves, John Mayer isnt on tv saying he's the new Clapton, some college grad at a label is doing that so he can get his bonus check from his bosses. I dont buy HYPE because its a creation nothing more, how is this proven, well every other month the cover of Q magazine lists a new rock band as the Greatest Band ever, thats one example. So is it unfair that an artist doesnt get "props" that it deserves, hell yeah, but whos fault is that? That is all about the playing field NOT being equal anymore, its about turning on MTV and never seeing a video but instead seeing a dumb ass southern white girl saying "gangsta" like shes cool, its about turning on VH1 and not seeing a video but seeing stereotypical black and white people 24/7.
The industry has changed we all know that, but one way its changed is that labels dont challenge their artists, nor do their peers. Just look at the bands of the 80's from The Cure,U2,Depeche Mode,Inxs etc.. these bands were knocking out videos, singles, tours and doing an album a year at least. Labels dont want that anymore, they hate that kind of output because they cant keep up with it anymore, they dont know what to do with it. Read my INXS thread just started, they had 5 albums between 1980-1985 and it took till 1985 to have a Top 10, and during those first 4 albums only once did they score a Top 40 single, their first 4 albums combined sold less than High School Musical did its first week. But the label didnt care, it had people that believed in the Band, it also had a band that could play 250 shows a year, there are Rock Bands now that will never play 250 shows in their careers let alone a year. The point is labels are afraid to lose but to win in the end. I am thankful i grew up during that time when a label had some form of patience and belief in an artist, and was able to deal with them growing album to album and not worrying about a "timetable" of when you should be at a certain place at a certain time. "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

Right On !
The Fast Food Mentality towards music has ruined it in my opinion..so many people dont even realize that they are being TOLD whats cool..or whats HOT or cutting edge..9 times out of 10 by someone that cant play/sing/dance and is far from Cool himself ! Sad..
