Madonna values her fans and her fame. She doesn't take either for granted. There are a million Madonna clips on YouTube and she doesn't care one bit. She's smart enough to realize that it's just more promotion for her and her music. It's too bad that Prince doesn't view it that way confused

Yeah.. I'm disappointed in Prince. I wonder what's going-on in his mind? Maybe he needs the money--every last dime or something like that? It's just so weird he appears so selfish? The problem with Prince is that he NEVER explains himself. He just comes-off as arrogant.

As far as Madge and Janet, no... they express appreciation for their fans at least, and for sure don't threaten to sue em. However, I think some sites were contacted by Virgin a few times regarding illegal downloads or something? Wasn't the Janet-friends forum and also.. another site with a bunch of performances threatened by Virgin? Plus there was an issue with Janet's fan-club?

Anyway.. Prince sure doesn't look too good right now.

I know, even people like David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks/Lindsey Buckingham, Peter Gabriel, REM, Coldplay, U2, Duran Duran, Bon Jovi, etc. wont treat their fanbases the way Prince treats his!!!

The same goes for most actors and actresses!! I know that Johnny Depp, Samuel L. Jackson, Matt Damon, Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx for example all have a high regard for their fans!!!!nod nod

its always been often said, he has always been an arogant man..luckily this has affetced his music in a positive way, but has affected his decisions outside of music often in a negative way (such as now). not that i feel like prince has 'turned' on fans, just has been going the wrong way about things such as youtube and fan sites. (to be fair though, i wouldnt exactly want a site such as this running if i were an artist...such utter drivel on it so much i wonder why some members ever signed up.)
Wouldn't you love to love me?

That is par for the course for any record label. Warner has done it on behalf of Madonna as well.

Wasn't the Janet-friends forum and also.. another site with a bunch of performances threatened by Virgin? Plus there was an issue with Janet's fan-club?

If my memory serves me correctly, Janet-Friends and Janet-Xone were asked by Virgin to not post high-quality copies of the first two Damita Jo singles when they were leaked. I've never heard of Virgin or Universal (which owns Janet's A&M material) giving Janet Media ANY problems, and that is the major media site offering performances, rare music and other stuff.

Miss-Janet was fan-run for 10 years, but eventually Louisa had enough with Virgin and Janet's lack of involvement, and so the fan club closed. That's pretty much the whole story there. Louisa was upset with Janet because she felt Janet didn't seem to care about the club's demise or the hard work Louisa and the others put into the club. But, it needs to be said that while the fan club was active, those running it had really close personal interaction with Janet (ie. Louisa had Janet's personal phone number, Janet arranged dinners, meet-and-greets etc. for them...and these were FANS running the club, not business managers). The fact that Janet let fans run her club in the first place is great, because they actually had an investment in Janet's work and not simply her bank account. When Janet was personally involved, Miss-Janet was a great club. It should also be noted that the others involved with the running of the club don't feel the same as Louisa. And a lot of fans were upset with the way the fan club was run in its last few years (ie. unprofessionally) and wanted a properly run venture like Friends of Janet was. Janet will probably have that again with Island/Def Jam.

Back during the Velvet Rope era, Janet and Rene would have random web chats with those who used to hang out in the Miss Janet chat room (my boyfriend still has the transcripts). Rene and Janet used to call up fans, go on webcam at home, everything. It's not surprising to me that Janet withdrew somewhat from her fans after stalkers started popping out of the woodwork, especially during the All For You era.

No. I think Janet's entire "Make a photo cover" was Janet inviting her fans to be part of the process (though limiting them to pictures she allowed). Michael is probably very supportive of his fans still talking about it and doing whatever...He needs those fans and probably loves it! Madonna, not so sure but I doubt it.

I was really surprised to see this today. I can't believe Prince. This is sooo far fetched and I get part of it (wanting to control is art and not let it be manipulated and prehaps ruined) but going after a site like this is not the right thing. And you can't, unfornately, go after people that are posting the entire albums for free (especially the new ones). Putting stuff on Youtube's is a good thing, BTW, I can't imagine people treating the often low quality youtube videos the same way as movies. This is not the right thing to do.

It's bullshit, isn't it? He's insane.

I have also heard grumblings about the way Icon and Mariah's fanclub are run. It sounds like few fans are actually pleased with their artist's fanclub.

Well, I've always liked the fact that Prince was a bitch and thought he was better than everyone else. It goes with everything that being a star should be about. He was also untouchable. I mean, if you got an autograph from him, you were somebody because he rarely gave autographs. You ain't shit if every average Joe off the street has the same autograph you have.

Anyway, as far as the others go, Madonna used to be an outrageous slutty whore but she's became too normal and tame. Janet was too damn nice, normal, and was never wild to begin with. Michael was the only one that was freaky but he hangs out with children so that makes him goofy and dorky.

Prince was the only one that was an outrageous "I'm better than you" bitch and remained one to this day. However, the bitch has gone too far when he wants to control what people can say. On the rare times that he talks, he likes to speak his mind whether people like what he has to say or not. Well, I'm the same way. I like to speak my mind also and not give a damn who likes it or not. Don't try to control what I say though because I'm a bitch too. As far as everything else Prince is doing like trying to keep his videos off of youtuube, trying to take all his pictures off the internet, etc. I could care less. That's just a bitch being a bitch and I love a bitch. However, no one has the right to control what someone says.

As for the other entertainers liking their fans or being so down to earth that you wouldn't even think they were a star, that's exactly what I don't like. I like an entertainer that looks like a star, acts like a star, and flaunts being a star. Prince is all those things but trying to stop what people say is trying to dictate.

Beside them, you can also ask the same question about the potential of other recording artists doing the same thing that Prince is doing, which is basically going freaking rogue by declaring war on fan sites.

This is a sad day to be a fan of music at the moment. sad

Oh, I agree. Sometimes I think he takes the bitch diva role a little too far but I would never want to see him being one of those stars that stands on the edge of the stage after a performance and shakes hands and signs autographs for any and everybody that wants one. I like his larger than life untouchable image. I also like his mysterious image. If he were to do too much talking, we would soon find out that he's just a normal average everyday guy that just happens to be very talented. We might even get bored with him.

Actually, that's probably the main reason I kept giving him another chance with each and every album in the late 1980s following his style change in 1985. If Rick James, Cameo, or The Barkays had drastically changed their style like he did in the late 1980s, they wouldn't have gotten a chance to grow on me. I would have simply just dropped them instantly.

I always loved Prince's "fuck you" attitude since the first day I laid eyes on him on "American Bandstand". His attitude helped me to get through my junior and senior high school years. Being a young person struggling with my sexuality in those years, if people called me particular names, my attitude was like...."Hey, fuck 'em. I'm better than them anyway". I carried myself with strength and people thought twice before they fucked with me.

I don't think I've ever gotten fully bored with Prince himself except for certain albums. What I got bored with a long time ago, were the Prince fans who thought he could do no wrong and thought the sun rose and set on his ass. You know the kind, the ones that write sentences full of "u's", "2's", "4's" and use that damn eye symbol for the word "I". They also talk in puzzles like Prince does. That's being a fan to the point of being obsessive. Hell, if Prince does that, hey, that's him. They need to find something to make themselves original.

nod Ahh, that was such a defining, wonderful moment. I loved it. If you can follow it up with something that FU attitude goes a long way. I’m not completely tired or bored with him yet because he did indeed lose me for a few years where I didn’t follow him so closely so a lot of that music is still fresh to me. Maybe not the best, but new enough to keep me interested.

When I think of Prince, I always think of the guy from 1978-1984 that had a style of his own and the sound was definately "Prince". From 1985 to the present, I don't even consider that music "Prince" music (meaning Prince being strictly Prince), I consider those years as Prince immitating his heros he grew up with such as James Brown, The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, etc. It's great music but it doesn't even feel like I'm listening to the same guy I listened to from 1978-1984. It's hard to explain. It's not like he's grown but it's like he's a completely different person altogether.

I still buy each and every album. Hell, I have to. I love funk and who else is making funk these days except Prince? But I come to the org mainly for the "Music: Non-Prince" section. I go over to the Prince section once in a while out of boredom when too many current music threads take over this section. It's always fun to make a Lawrence Welk comment about the "Parade" album and watch the fams go crazy. lol

So what do most serious Prince fans (not fams) consider his last great album? SOTT? TRC? I can’t hang out in the Prince forum so I don’t know what they rave over these days.
