Marvin Gaye's guitarist wants help in distributing Marvin's 1983 concert as a DVD... A few hours ago, I received an e-mail from Gordon Banks, Marvin Gaye's trusted musical director, guitarist and a former brother-in-law, who is looking to get a rare 1983 concert from Marvin's final tour, the "Sexual Healing" tour, to be distributed and released as a DVD. Gordon says he has the footage, he said a DVD deal was close to being signed by NBC Universal. He's not too sure if the deal would pass. I wonder if it is closing in on a deal myself. And yeah, there are some live DVD stuff: Get his 1980 concert at the Montreux Jazz Festival. It should be titled "Marvin Gaye: Live in Montreux 1980" and his 1976 Holland concert is on DVD too but I forgot the name of it.  [Edited 11/6/07 19:58pm] | |

Other than Gordon, who was the musical director/leader/conductor, there was David Ly on sax, "MR. FRANK BLAIR" on bass, three trumpeters, Fernando Harkness on keyboards I think, a cute percussionist with a big Afro, and three stylish background vocalists. The crowd got into it during "How Sweet It Is" after Marvin coaxed them to repeat after him. I loved it when he played the drum kit and the keyboards. He was more effortless on the keyboards though because he started a little rusty on the drums but eventually got going too.  A great show from top to finish! | |

I hope the quality is good on this. I haven't seen any of the video from this tour, but I have heard audio recordings that have been "officially" released. THey all sound horrible. They all sound like bootlegs. The sad part is that some of these were issued by major labels.

Plus it would be the 25th Anniversary of the acutal concert so it really makes alot of sense to get this out. All that classic stuff needs to come out, when i was back in Music Retail i had people all the time coming in for Dvds for conerts on The Spinners,Marvin,Miles,Kool and the Gang,Smokey etc.. I think its such bullshit that the industry says that music dvds dont make money and arent wanted, shit, put the right stuff out and people will buy! [Edited 11/7/07 9:09am] Yeah, I actually have footage from one of Marvin's documentaries and it showed him singing "Sexual Healing" and he stripped to his trousers but stopped short of stripping saying "I'm not Prince, lemme put these up!"  So yeah that was BEFORE all of that. | |
