I have this DVD and it is very good. I was able to see one of his "friends" play (Stochelo Rosenberg) up close and personal when I was in France a few years ago. As to your question, "Who is the best living guitar player ?", it's a question that won't really be answered based on any quantifiable evidence here. It really boils down to taste and preference IMO. You'd probably get more productive answers by asking something like, "Who is your favorite living guitar player ?" tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 [Edited 9/24/07 16:53pm] "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. BUCKETHEAD..because he can play anything and everything. Funk, ambience, shred, acoustic, hard rock, heavy metal, techno, cyberthrash, blues.. he does it all. And he writes cool jams.

Jeff Beck has done it all, and innovated A LOT of stuff guitarists still use today. If he stuck with a singer, he would be recoginzed as one of the best ever, and the band probably would've out sold Led Zeppelin. Maybe we can go to the movies and cry together

heartbeatocean said: So, Audience, Who is your favorite living guitar player? Not really isolated to one particular player as the ones I enjoy all bring something unique to the table. Just a short list off the top of my head... George Benson - his older instrumental material Jeff Beck - over 60 and still able to bring it Allan Holdsworth Jean-Paul Bourelly Wayne Krantz Tommy Emmanuel Lionel Loueke Greg Howe Johnny Smith - from what I can tell he's still alive Oz Noy Keb Mo Buddy Guy B.B. King Larry Carlton Robben Ford ...well, maybe not so short. (please don't ask for the long list) tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

Much more important than how many chord voicings you know or how many "npm" (note per millisecond) you can clock. Many players out there, although blessed with amazing technique, are basically cloning someone else. If you can't tell who's playing within the first few chords or notes of a solo, they've still got work to do. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Nice picks.
Speaking of cats whose "voices" you can pick out of a crowd, these two should get a mention... ...John Scofield & Pat Metheny tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

Speaking of cats whose "voices" you can pick out of a crowd, these two should get a mention... ...John Scofield & Pat Metheny ... Definitely! I got into John Scofield about the same time I got into Jean Paul Bourelly.... I remember somebody on a jazz station playing them back to back--actually, they played something by Mike Stern, too...and the great thing was each one had their Own Sound, I could actually tell who was who after a few notes.... The funny thing about Pat Metheny is, I keeep thinking of him as a composer first rather than a guitar player, which is odd, because he's a hellof a player and sure has his own distinct sound... I think it must be that his writing always takes the whole band, or orchestra, or trio in mind..even if it's a duet, his writing always serves the whole, rather than focusing on one particular person.... ...
