Alicia Keys cover of "How To Save A Life" This will not be on her album. She just decided to sing it live on the radio the other day in London.

Hearing her sing someone else's song really highlights the huge gulf between her poor songwriting and the songwriting of a professional. Who ever wrote that song was a professional. Who knows, if she gave up writing her own material, I might actually listen to her music. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

LOL. I remember hearing this song, maybe once or twice, but I never really listened to it. It is indeed a beautiful song. The band name is The Frays, I believe. Studiotraffic-One of the fastest ways to get payed on the net! | |

I've never heard it before, but I love it right away. A poignant melody and not a cliche in sight. I'm guessing The Frays are white, right? “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

Even the retro acts don't know how to marry real melodies with strong lyrics. The Youtube link is playing in bits. I'll have to let it run and then replay it so I can hear it unobstructed, though from the bits I'm hearing the lead singer's voice doesn't really sound like my thing. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

They owe their Hit to Snow Patrol who owe their Hit Keane who owe their Hits to Coldplay who owe their career to RadioHead and a-HA. The point is the song stands out from what Alicia normally does because it's not weighed down with mindlessness. Having heard half of the original version I have to say I prefer Alicia's version. The band have got a stereotype indie sound which I don't like. But in Alicia's hands the beauty of the song comes through. You need to divorce your image of The Fray and their cliched sound from the actual song itself. Listen to Alicia's version and forget The Fray. I've only heard it once, but it impressed me way more than anything else I've heard Alicia do. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

I'm pretty sure if you'd never heard The Fray's version your opinion would be completely different. The arrangement compliments the melody perfectly, and she only starts oversinging toward the end. Her singing at the start of the second verse for instance was beautiful. She actually had a softness there that reminded me of MJ. This is by far the best thing I've ever heard Alicia do. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

No the song sucks... Atrocious song writing, the arrangement reaks of somebody who listened to way too much cold play and tried to rewrite his own version of a cold play song. The Fray pulled it off, for what it was, a shitty alternative rock song. Cool... it's gonna attract shitty alternative rock nerds... Alicia is a horrible singer... Has only become one recently though... The industry has currupted her and she relies heavily on Autotune... So a shitty song + shitty singing, = extra shitty... Now no offense, but maybe you like shitty singing and shitty arrangements... Thats cool... There are a sea of people who liked shitty songs like that IE a whole bunch of Creed and Pearl Jam fans. You can't help what you like... And you can't help what you hate... You like her version, i hate it... who gives a fuck really? world still gonna turn... one love I am a Rail Road, Track Abandoned

Coldplay don't write choruses or vaguely coherent lyrics. Now I'm sure if I'd heard The Fray before I'd probably have changed the channel because of their generic overall sound, but sometimes a song can have some latent magic in it regardless of everything else. I really think Alicia's version brings that out. I actually thought the melody in someplaces reminded me of Suzanne Vega (the end of the chorus particularly). I'd love to hate on this, but I can't. I think it's great. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

My instinct is that if I read it on paper I'd probably just yawn. I guess it's the melody and keyboard part working together with Alicia's voice that make it work and the lyrics are just good enough to hold it together, but probably wouldn't stand up to close inspection, but why would I want to ruin it by giving it a close inspection? “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

I suppose ignorance is bliss I mean if you're gonna listen to that mess theres a whole bunch of better songs in that type of Genre. Round Here(and or ColorBlind) by Counting Crowes, Don't I Hold You by Wheat, Avalanche By Ryan Adams Avalanche alone Owns How To Save a Life, Melodically and lyrically But i guess it's unfair cause Issac Slade is no where near the writing level that Adam's on. But then again no one even knows who Adams is, yet fuckin worship the fray Of all the songs in that genre to cover. The fuckin fray... tickles the fuck out of me if you ever get the chance to listen to avalanche, you'll punch the next guy who even mentions the fray I am a Rail Road, Track Abandoned

Just listened to it again. This is the most sensitive vocal performance I've heard from Alicia. When she does her wailing thing she sounds strained, but listen to her breathiness on the soft bits. Her tone on those bits reminds me of Suzanne Vega with a bit of MJ's breathier tone. She should use this style more often. Much more often.
