Stevie Wonder at MSG A little bit before I go on with the concert review:
Stevie Wonder was my first serious musical inspiration. His music changed my perception of what music sounds like and what it could be. Before then, I had listened to a lot of reggae; my parents are Jamaican. I also listened to what was on the radio, which was at the time in the 90's had some decent RnB, Boys II Men etc. I also was interested in Michael Jackson, and often imitated his voice and dancing, but I was only a pre-teen with no spending money, and I never really knew of albums outside of the records my dad has. So in '97, I was into the boy 'band' craze and my friend makes a joke about Stevie Wonder being blind. Im like, who's Stevie Wonder; well I found out. Over the next few years, I dl'ed tons of Stevie Wonder, and wondered, why isn't music like this? I long soon bought every album to know his musical genius and he inspires me musically and as a person everyday. Now onto the concert... MSG Stevie Wonder concert I arrived about 40 minutes early to Madison Square garden, took my seat and waited. it filled up quickly, and you could see NYC had mad love for Stevie Wonder. He started the show a bit late, probably about 20 minutes after eight. For anyone who hasn't been to the concert, he spoke a bit about his mother's death being the reason for the Wonder Summer and now Fall tour. He sat on his piano and with his eldest daughter, Aisha by his side, they begun "Loves In Need of Love Today" The setlist was pretty much the same : Loves In Need of Love Today Too High Visions Masterblaster Jammin' Higher Ground Golden Lady Ribbon In The Sky Overjoyed You and I Lately If Its Magic How Will I Know Don't You Worry Bout a Thing Signed Sealed Delivered(I'm Yours) My Cherie Amour Boogie on Reggae Woman For Once in My Life For Once in My Life Sir Duke I Wish You are The Sunshine of My Life Superstition As Although there wasn't any actual intermissions, he did some cool stuff on the talk box, We Got The Funk, Whats Going On, We are Family. He also did For Once in My Life with Tony Bennet, which NYC showed mad love for him. The highlight of the night definitely had to be Superstition. Stevie sang it, and then got The Purple One, Prince to play guitar on the song. I was so totally screaming out "So What The Fuss!" Anyway, the duo brought it. Amazing. The last song was As, and as stevie sang it, he let us sing part, as if we're singing to him. It was amazing. Usually Im like I don't want to hear anyone to sing when someone like Stevie is already doing it, but the concert made it ok, if not giving a feeling of family. Stevie Wonder, theres not talent like him, God Bless him. At this point in history, we have a choice to make

I saw him at his stellar 3-hour hometown Detroit show. Wonderful show. I'm so glad I got to see him. "Half of what I say is meaningless; but I say it so that the other half may reach you." - Kahlil Gibran | |
