October 11th: TORI AMOS at The WaMU Theater at Madison Square Garden: Before getting into this review, I should explain the concept behind Tori Amos' latest album 'American Doll Posse' for which this is accompanying tour. There are five women that Tori channels on the album, each singing a number of songs that are appropriate to their respective personalities. One of the women, Pip, is rebellious and angry and it was that character that performed the opening set for this show. After the band had taken the stage (John Evans on bass, Dan Philips on guitar and longtime Tori drummer Matt Chamberlain) Pip emerges from the curtains along the back with long dark hair wearing a short gold dress with black vinyl leggings and sits between her piano and keyboard to angrily perform the first track "Cruel". The rage in Pip's persona was evident in nearly every song--"Fat Slut" was performed mostly on her knees and her finale, "The Waitress" was epic with some new lyrics at the end culminating in Pip flipping off the sky (God?) before storming offstage. There was a quick break for the crew to switch the keyboard with an organ while the band played over a remix of "Professional Widow". Tori herself then came onstage wearing a glittery one-armed top/pants combo for her set sometimes playing both the piano and organ simultaneously (I love when she does that). She didn't properly greet the audience until after her third song as Pip was filled with too much venom to make any conversation. After the sixth song, the band took a break letting Tori perform solo. The first "song" was actually an improvisational retelling of experiences on the European leg of this tour (some audience member tried to steal Tori's shoes until she sicced her bodyguard on her) and a hilarious incident with Tori's daughter on the plane trip overseas (she told her little girls should play with themselves in private, ha). The band then returned for the rest of the evening, the best moment being the first encore for which "Bouncing Off Clouds" (the only non-Tori song from her latest album after Pip's set) had everyone on their feet. This may well have been the best Tori show I've ever seen.

October 12th: TORI AMOS at The WaMU Theater at Madison Square Garden: The second Tori Amos show in New York for this tour featured an opening set by the seductive Santa persona. She was very cool in the way she slinked onstage in her little red dress like she was going to have a serious night on the town, but it's hard to top Pip's fire the night before. Nevertheless, hearing Santa's "Secret Spell" was lovely and her rendition of "Sugar" may be the best one I've heard to date. Tori came back after another "Professional Widow" remix-interlude wearing the same one armed sparkle suit as the night before. She finally greeted us after the fourth song followed by an improvisational number about being a cute boy in New York City. Interestingly, she performed "Doughnut Song" solo in the middle of the set with the band. Tori didn't talk to us that much tonight. Maybe it had to do with starting late and eventually running overtime which as a result, after "Precious Things" she announced to the audience that she was being kicked off the stage and apologized. However she and the band quickly returned for a second encore and two more songs--one less than was scheduled (the odd girl out was "Taxi Ride"). The American Doll Posse concept works so much better live when there is a visual to associate with each persona. Ideally I would have liked to have seen sets by all four of the other girls, but that was not logistically possible. Maybe shows by all four girls will be released on disc soon like Tori's last tour.

October 16th: REGINA SPEKTOR at Hammerstein Ballroom - After slowly ascending the ladder of prestigious concert venues in New York City, Regina has finally reached the great Hammerstein Ballroom. It was a homecoming for her and she said friends and family were in attendance. Word is that she was slightly under the weather, but said she was feeling better when someone in the audience asked. The last time I saw her she was complemented by a band and I was hoping to see a repeat of that tonight, but she performed solo with her piano keeping the show more traditionally Regina-like. And that's good because there is no way she would have been able to correct all the mistakes she made tonight where she had to start verses, or in one instance the entire song, over from the beginning. I remember her having trouble particularly with "Ghost Of Corporate Future" where she ad-libbed that we should avoid the 10 o-clock news on Fox which drew laughter and applause. After the last mistake she admitted that she just needs to start drinking already. Regina's fans at this stage of her career are rabid so it wasn't that much of a surprise that this show was sold out. Or that I had one woman singing every song (badly) in my ear until she moved up closer to the stage. You have to take the good with the bad sometimes.

October 29th: VAN HUNT at B.B.King's - Last year's Van Hunt concert at The Canal Room was the best show I had seen in 2006 so I passed up Type O Negative's annual New York Halloween show to see Van's New York City return tonight. Van had a different band from last year, but still consisted of a drummer, bassist, keyboardist and guitarist in addition to Van Hunt himself on guitar. The drummer was the only woman this time and she was working up a serious sweat behind her kit. That's always good to see. There was one overenthusiastic guy in the front that kept on trying to get Van Hunt and the guitarist's attention, wanting to give them his camera so they could take his picture. He yelled out something to the drummer at the beginning of "N The Southern Shade" after which Van Hunt gave him some looks and eventually stopped the song because the mood was ruined. After telling the guy to calm down (much to the rest of the crowd's delight), Van started the song over and the hyper-fan kept quiet for the rest of the night. Back to the show, Van and the band funked and rocked, the part of the B.B.King's audience on the floor really getting into the show. Near the end, Van tried to get the more reserved attendees sitting at the tables at the far sides and in the rear to also show some life and put down their pork chops (ha-ha). The finale of the main set had Van jump down into the crowd to sing a few lines before making his way back onstage to say good night. The first two songs of the encore were on guitar only before the rest of the band joined in for "The Lowest 1 Of My Desires" for which Van led the audience in an explicit chant (for the "freaks") and alternatively, a more demure one (for the "prudes"). While I didn't get the same sense of awe as last year (due mostly to the setlist), it was still an incredible performance to witness.

October 31st: RASPUTINA at Music Hall of Williamsburg - I've seen cellists Rasputina on Halloween here in New York in both 2004 and 2005 and naturally they get dressed for the occasion. Tonight, lead cellist Melora was a Native-American woman, drummer Jonathon was King Neptune and second cellist Sarah Bowman was...I don't know whom she was. She wore a few peacock feathers in her hair and a nifty white corset. Melora called her "Edgar Allan Poe-bitch" I think when they explained their costumes after the third song. Melora's ramblings in between songs are always a highlight although I've seen them live so many times now, that some are becoming predictable--for example, Melora again introduced "Draconian Crackdown" as a translated Osama Bin Laden speech. She flubbed once saying one song was proof of George Washington's involvement with the 9-11 attacks instead of George Bush (now THAT was funny). She shot down our requests at the beginning of the encore complaining how the band can't keep every song from their catalog memorized to be pulled out and played willy-nilly--and then performed the first two lines of "Baby Got Back" after which she told us that was what we wanted to hear, but didn't know it. The music as always was divine--just seeing Melora's hands glide over her cello in complicated patterns is something I always love to watch. The song that received the most radical makeover tonight was "Transylvanian Concubine" which became a stomper thanks mostly to Jonathon's booming drums. At the end of the show, the band stayed onstage and posed for pictures so fans can later email them photos of themselves in costume since Melora forgot her camera this year.

I caught one of only 2 US shows for White Chalk! The other show was in New York. The show was held at the Orpheum which is absolutely gorgeous. LA actually has quite a rich architectural history that tends to get lost in the shuffle. It's nice to be reminded that my city has such wonderfully beautiful artistic venues The stage is sparsely decorated. On the left is a Piano, decorated in white holiday lights. In the center back is an amp. On the right is an electronic keyboard, with a cymbal to its right and a little black box on a stand off to the side. In the center front is a mic. The lights are dimmed and Polly comes out to the center of the stage. For the remainder of the night, she was the only participant on this stage, with exception of a stagehand, Roy I think his name was, who came out to hand her different guitars throughout the night. Well he comes out bearing a guitar and PJ wraps herself with her instrument and begins strumming..... strum, strum, strum, strum, strum strum, strum, strum, strum, strum strum, strum, strum, strum, strum strum, strum, strum, strum, strum I was born in the desert I been down for years Jesus come closer I think my time is near And I've traveled over, dry earth and floods Hell and highwater.....to bring you my love STRUM STRUM..... OK, I am already fainting She was spot on vocally on this song, including the tarzan vocals at the end (thanks anx) She then sang Send His Love to Me. She then went to her piano and sang When Under Ether, The Devil and White Chalk. I absolutely loved these songs. OK, I am a HUGE fan of Desire. It's my favorite PJ album, mostly because of how different it is from the rest of her work. It is so poetic She was rockin on her last 2 albums and now she is marmish with a non rock album. Already many fans are unhappy with the tone of this album and the departure it represents. Loving the departure of Desire, I have no problem believing I will be able to devour this album with no regret. She revealed to the crowd that she had written the lyrics to these new songs on her dress so say she needed help with "The Devil", she could look at her right sleeve or her left sleeve for "When Under Ether". Not only was she playing her art but she was cloaked in it as well She then rocked out to Mansize and then into Angeline..... One of my favorite songs of hers ever. OMG, can't even say what it means to have heard this! She finishes and walks over to the keyboard with the cymbal set up and the little box on a stand, which turns out to be computer programmed beats and stuff like that. She begins her beat on the computer box and then launches into "Leah". Now she played this on the first concert I saw and during that performance it was a band effort. Matter of fact, there were 2 drummers. Like in that first concert, she clanged the cymbal in the middle of the song as it sounds on the album. But this time her lone presence on the stage made the song that much more desolate and haunted. Fabulous!!! Next, she used the computer box and played Nina in Ecstacy. I only know this song because of a B-Side set that a friend made for me and she said that she has no idea why that song never made it on a proper album but that it was one of her favorite songs. Next she manipulated that computer box and played "Electric Light". Some of you might remember that I posted a thread about my favorite of her albums, "Is This Desire". It is said that most of the songs on that album are about literary characters. I don't think I will ever read any books those characters are in for fear of ruining what Desire has become to me. Well I explained that album and how I see it in that thread and it was with that thread in mind that I listened to "Electric Light" and I had a revelation on how to explain that song in context with the story I told about that album. That thread is here and I have updated my disertation to include my new found story about Electric Light: http://www.prince.org/msg/8/211561 After that, she donned her guitar and sang Shame, Snake, Big Exit and Who The Fuck. Love, betrayal, devotion, and forcible separation Then her guitar was taken by the stagehand and she proceeded to sit down in a chair and remarked on how beautiful the theater was and she mentioned the chandeliers, which were absolutely gorgeous, and she said they were one of the most beautiful pair of eyes she has ever looked in She held something that at first glance I thought was an accordion but my friend said it was a mandalin but I don't think that is right either. It was probably about 18x18 and it had little strings and she strummed it like a guitar but it looked more like a miniature harp. Anyway, she played that thing and sang "Down By The Water". Now a friend here at work said that his friend who went was disappointed that she didn't have a band. I told my friend that this concert lacked nothing because of it. He said his friend would have loved to hear a drummer backing her and that reminded me of her performance of "Down by The Water". During the song while she is strumming that little harp, she was using her high heel as percussion. My friend's friend was totally lost on the fact she was taking amazing artistic license and a drummer would have just watered it down and stolen that from her performance. It was Fantastic to hear the contrast between the piano, the guitar, the keyboards and computer box, and back to the guitar and to the piano. Seriously, made for such richness and texture. After these songs, she played Grow Grow Grow, The Mountain and Silence on the piano. Again loved these new songs. LOVE THEM. With this she thanked the crowd and left the stage. The audience rose to its feet in standing ovation, which she clearly deserved. She came back on and did an encore of Rid of Me, Water, The Piano and Desperate Kingdom of Love, all on the guitar. DESPERATE. KINGDOM. OF. LOVE! OMFG! I absolutely adore that song and it was the song that sparked one of my music mixes in which 2 songs from that disc became the inspiration and the basis on which I wrote my domestic abuse thread. The starkness and honesty of these songs is astounding and when taken as a collective, you get a real sense as to the person that Polly has been, and is becoming. Never failing to reach down to the bottom of the pit of her soul and giving expression to emotions that most of us barely dare to think about. Thank God there is someone in my life that can make me feel all these things. I am blessed to have such a remarkable musical hero as PJ Harvey..... Gawd, some of these shows sound more like full mind/body experiences! I need to go to more live shows If you will, so will I | |

Having only seen 2 shows, I would venture to say that this is probably going to rank as one of her most personal shows ever. The starkness and honesty of these songs is astounding and when taken as a collective, you get a real sense as to the person that Polly has been, and is becoming. Never failing to reach down to the bottom of the pit of her soul and giving expression to emotions that most of us barely dare to think about. Thank God there is someone in my life that can make me feel all these things. I am blessed to have such a remarkable musical hero as PJ Harvey..... Okay, now I can say my last show was Anita Baker @ the Golden Gate theater on Friday night My mom really wanted to see her & I didn't think I'd be that into it but had a great time. Forgot how many songs she has & she sounds just as good as on record - amazing voice! All the diva stuff I heard about her in the past was not apparent at all - she was friendly, in great spirits, danced a lot, talked w/ the audience a lot. Really awesome (except for the sucky sound).

I didn't know Anita toured like that! My best friend woulda loved that since he's an Anita Baker freak! Apparently it's a new tour she's starting up. She mentioned doing only 3 dates to start, but she did say she'd like to "come back next year" so maybe it'll be a full on tour soon | |

My last show was New Young Pony Club, Muscles + Simian Mobile Disco after-show party in Brooklyn. I was going to do other shows (like The Police + Go! Team, etc.), but it was Halloween time and I ended up doing a lot of other stuff and couldn't make it...
Great show. I wasn't going in with much expectations. I heard NYPC's debut "Fantastic Playroom" and I've been feeling the singles off of it for about a year now, but I guess it's true what they say about some acts: Sometimes it's better onstage than on wax. The first half was the warm-up, but by the time "The Get Go" kicked in, I had my hands in the air the rest of the night. Their style is very coercive. Even if you went in not expecting to have a good time, by the end your silly ass is hooting along. My highlights were the former along with "Grey" and "Get Lucky." Overall, the song that wowed me and made me a believer in the live-ness that is NYPC was when Tahita and crew kicked in with a no-holds-barred rendition of Technotronic's warhorse "Pump Up The Jam." It was like someone swtiched on a power generator in the venue because as soon as Tahita sang the opening lines everybody was chanting along, jumping and KILLING IT. KILLING THE SHIT. HA! The energy in that place was too much by that point. Sweaty bodies banging against each other and neon lights channelling through the intermitted blackouts. It was a scene in there. During the blackouts, I will admit, I did start a nocturnal kind-of cooing noise that echoed in near the front of the stage and had a chain effect before they reemerged during the encore with "The Bomb." Last nite I met a grrrl who said she has connections in the Melbourne independent music community .Who says she has connections .We didn't have to panick :clap, clap, clap, clap, clap-p: .We spent all our summer drinking lemonade in hammocks .lemonade in hammocks .lemonade in hammocks .lemonade in hammocks .lemonade in hammocks! Labelmate Muscles preceeded their set with tunes from his current debut: He did all my faves [plus, he snapped a picture of us!, above]; and it was the after-show spot for the duo known as Simian Mobile Disco, who came in afterwards and did a cool little DJ set. Sidenote: I had a great time, but it was stinging because a day after I became mildly sick as a result of dehydration. [Edited 11/6/07 10:37am] | |

November 6th: ALICE SMITH at Mercury Lounge. A month ago, I honestly didn't know who Alice Smith was. Then after seeing a full page article in SPIN and hearing some myspace samples, I'm at a sold out show in the cramped Mercury Lounge with other believers. The first thing I noticed is that her figure is tall and slender as I watched her walk onstage. What suprised me the most however, was how genuinely funny she is. I'm not talking about comedienne telling jokes-funny, I'm talking downright goofy. She had the crowd laughing so much between songs with her body language and awkward comments and observations. But most important of course was her voice. Backed by a drummer, bassist and guitarist, her voice soared to peaks and valleys framed perfectly in a classic rock/soul vibe that you don't hear too often in these conventional times. No one specific song stood out to me as they all sounded fantastic although I was surprised and excited to hear her cover of "Alone" being a closet Heart fan. It will be a crime if Alice doesn't make it big.
