Ever Get Burned Out of an Artist/Band You REALLY Like?

So I was listening to some of my favorite artists today, and all of the sudden, this feeling of, "I'm sick of this" just kind of crept into my mind. I mean these are some of my all time favorite songs....and it's like I've played them so much that now, I'm sick of them.

I never thought it would happen.

And it's like the more I thought of listening to that stuff, I just didn't want to.

I went on a quest for some new music as a result...and I loved what I found!

Have any of you orgers ever gotten burned out of artist/band you really like? How did you combat it? Do you still not like it this day?

I know this sounds dramatic..but music is my whole world and it just kinda rocked my world to think that...some of my favorite stuff really turned me off.

I will tend to get into phases with my favorite long-time artists where i will listen to them alot and then not for awhile, i have that with all of them pretty much, though i will still listen to songs here and there, i at times get into phases and fall out of them. BUT i always come back to them since there was a reason i listened in the first place.

Its happened to be on Stevie Wonder's studio albums before, but I was hipped to some of his live stuff, and Im hooked on that. but I think it just means that the music you know so well, you miss the emotional content by saying "Oh, this one again"

Happened real fast with Kanye West, though I never really considered myself a fan.
His whole arrogant behaviour and his flow got on my nerves but I still enjoy the stuff he did for Common.

Anxiety

i go back and forth between prince and bowie all the time. i'll listen to one of them all the time till i burn out, then i'll switch to the other. fortunately i listen to a lot of other stuff too, so i am usually able to stretch out my saturation periods. lol

I think of my music like its a salad bar...

I mix alot of stuff together at random, so that no particular thing gets overwhelming or annoying.

However, Prince is the lettuce in my salad, so he's pretty much a constant, but every now and then I get into those moods where its like "if I eat one more f--ing piece of lettuce, I'm gonna turn this whole salad bar upside-down!!!"

Oh yeah, music is all about moods, and I follow artists kind of like seasons. When I like someone I always like them, but I don't always feel them.

Especially stuff I know like the back of my hand. I can't listen to the Beatles forever, but I always rediscover it eventually.

I spent around four years listening to Prince a great deal (my true P fan era smile). This was between 1998 to 2002 and culminated in seeing him live at one of the awesome 'One Nite Alone' gigs.

I've rarely been one to play whole albums or tracks on constant rotation, but I had a wide and regualar P diet. But from 2003-ish, my general interest in his music has waned. The 'Rainbow Children'/ ONA era blew me away at the time, but since then, aside from the imo strong-ish 3121, his recent albums have been patchy and fairly uninspired. Ironically, as a regular poster on this site (almost exclusively on 'Non Prince Music'), I now rarely listen to him.

I'll still occasionally crack open TRC, 'Lovesexy' or even 'Come', but I now have little interest in his '80s work, being so familiar with it. I retain the greatest of respect for the man musically, especially these days as a live act.

P is the only artist I love who I can say I've gotten a little sick of. I can't even listen to SOTT and 'Parade' much anymore. That's how bad it is! smile

I'd much rather listen to all the zillion other artists, old and new to my ears.

I suspect it'll take a good 5 more years of deliberate Prince semi-starvation followed by another great new P album and tour for the purple mania to stand any chance of returning! biggrin

It happens all the time, but I always come back, because the music is great, and after time away, my appetite for the artist is refreshed.

I really phase in and out with Prince. Love him to death, but can become very sick of him.

But, he's not the only one. Too much of a good thing, is a bad thing.

Happens all the time. What I was really liking this morning may not come back around for years.

If you like lots of different music, too much of any one thing gets stale fast.

Whenever I really dig an artist I really overplay their music. First it was Michael Jackson. That affair lasted years and years. Around 2002 was when I started to overplay Prince. I had always been into him but more as a poor man's Michael Jackson than anything else. But the tables turned around 02 and Prince was God to me for a while. But it didn't last long because Michael had to go get himself arrested so HIStory didn't leave my CD player for months. But once I got sick of HIStory I just started to listening to a healthy variety of music until for some reason I got really stuck on The Beatles. I really, really overplayed them. After that I moved onto the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It didn't take long to overplay them. This brings me to 2005. I couldn't listen to anyone else but Michael Jackson during 2005. It would've been sacreligious to do so. June 13 2005 was when I overdosed on HIStory. But after a couple of months, when my excitement and joy over his vindication had died down I think I went back to the The Beatles and then moved on to the Chili Peppers because it wasn't long until I saw them live (March 06). 2006 was a big Chili Peppers year for me. I think I also got into Marilyn Manson a bit. It didn't take me long to overplay them but. Early 2007 was Princemania after I saw his Superbowl performance. But then Silverchair rocked up with a new album and I've been right into them for a while now. Powderfinger too. I haven't yet burned out of Silverchair, but Powderfinger is coming dangerously close. Actually, I've noticed I've been listening to Radiohead heaps. My guess is they'll be my next big love.

So it's like a big cycle for me. Michael Jackson, Prince, Beatles, Chili, some random band, Michael, Prince, Beatles, Chili, some other random band, etc.
