Of course, it got little or no airplay because it was funk so they dropped the funk and sold out to the current sound with their next album. Andy is a four letter word.

So glad that airplay or chart placements mean nothing to me: "You Are My Love" from "In The Face of Funk" is one of my all time favorite love songs (by any artist or group), as well as an incredibly singable song. They also showed Slave how "Slyde" should have been made. Yeah, I love that CD.
But I don't see 2000's release of "Sexy Sweet Thing" as being any kind of sell-out or dropped ball. To me, it was more of the same classic Cameosis that I had embraced since the late 70's. "I Wake Up", "Your Love", "Antidote", and the title cut demonstrated no lack of funk (in my book). It just seems to me that Larry Blackman and Tomi Jenkins can't write a bad song. And I remember reading that they were fans of Steely Dan as well as myself. That was a huge plus to me (with Steely Dan's attention to crystal clear lyrics/vocalizations and melody). Someone in these forums recently mentioned BB Kings club in NYC. I had tickets to see Cameo there about 2 years ago, and they canceled about 2 weeks or so before the show. Never was able to find out the explanation for that, and have been looking for them to perform ever since. Sadly, the last time I saw Cameo perform live was at The Apollo Theater when they were headlining for Evelyn "Champagne" King and Roger Troutman with Zapp. Needless to say, that was the last time I saw Roger perform too (RIP Brother Roger / F.U. Larry [yeah, I know that's messed-up, but I'm really angry with Larry Troutman] ).

this song was SOOOOO underrated. It got a lot of play in my area. it didn't make it on either of the greatest hits cd's nor does cameo perfom it live. I would rather hear that song than shake your pants or word up. nipsy

I'm glad that Cameo had such a hit with "Word Up", but I hate that it took the emphasis off so many of their other great songs. Too many people today think that "Word Up" was the only thing Cameo did, if they remember Cameo at all. Sort of the same thing happened with Rick James and "Super Freak". Back in the day: When actual musicians, who became stars due to their talents, actually played the music that you heard on their records, with real instruments. Back in the day: When people actually went to buy their favorite music at a record store (whether the radio played it or not, and without a video to promote it), and those people played those records at parties, where people actually danced! What novel ideas. Ahh, but I digress...

I love cameo but their version of slyde while good is not quite on par with slave's version. Slave's version is just totally raw with the mark adams bass licks and the guitar solos. It seems cameo's version is basically all keyboards. Yes vain i like it by cameo is the shit. I agree with pdogz as far as sweet sexy thing goes. I actually like it better than in the face of funk. After the first 3 or songs and the song called bsu, the rest of in the face of funk is rather stale. The rest of the album sounds like stale rehashed versions of older tunes. I think vain may be turned off by cameo having rappers on a few tunes but most of the album sounds like vintage cameo without being stale as on in the face of funk. I like the title track, i wake up , the interludes another crazy day and special love and you make me crazy. The last time i saw cameo live in 2002, they knocked the bottom out of you make me crazy. [Edited 10/24/07 17:28pm] Don't laugh at my funk

I liked the original slide too, but that electric guitar was too long and interupted a good bass line, to me. nipsy

I heard a song from that album on the "Tom Joyner Morning Show" and it sounded kinda midtempo shit hoppish so I didn't bother to buy the album because I had just assumed that they had finally gone ahead and sold out to the shit hop sound. After hearing this, now I wish I had bought it. Andy is a four letter word.

I didn't really mind the rappers on their version of "Slyde" because they had some good music behind them and I could just tune the rappers out. Of course, that was before shit hop had completely snuffed everything else out so I could tolerate it a little more back then. Nowadays though, I've grown to hate even the slightest influence of shit hop because of it's domination. Andy is a four letter word.

And when you try to find it online, you'll discover that it's either unavailable/out-of-print, or else they're asking up to $100 or more for the CD (because they know you can't find it anywhere else). Same with "Knights of the Sound Table" or other funk like Mutiny - "Mutiny on The Mamaship". Just crazy! Luckily, I have the vinyl for most of these albums, but the CD's are damn nearly impossible to find. And if you do, the prices are out of this world! Says a lot for The Funk. Unfortunately, what I've seen is that over the years they've reduced these great bands down to a handful of their "Greatest Hits" (which usually aren't), and the rest of the music that these bands made slowly becomes lost forever, or until some Japanese or German record company decides to pick it up and sell it back to us as an Import. Crazy!

That was part of a trend back in the day, which was largely popularized by this very record ("Slyde" by Slave). The trend was that in the middle of a hardcore soul/dance record, a screaming "rock" guitar solo would drop in and "blow your mind, man". Slave did it with "Slyde", and of course George Clinton's Funkadelic was all over that shit with "Knee Deep" and "One Nation Under A Groove". A bunch of other "soul" groups followed suit (like "A Taste of Honey", "Brick", "Con Funk Shun", "T-Connection"), and of course The Bar-Kays jumped on whatever was popular with everybody else at the time. It was the hottest idea in dance music, the idea that a "soul/R&B" group (or better yet; a BLACK group) could also drop some "rock" on you. It really opened the doors for groups like "Mother's Finest", and of course they walked right in and blew the doors off! LOL. That trend ran for a while, until the end of the 70's, early 80's when New Wave came in, and nobody knew what the Hell to do at that point, LOL. ENTER: RICK JAMES and PRINCE!

paisleypark4 said: What's Mutiny?
Mutiny was yet another P-Funk Spin-off Group, which included:
Executive Producer: Robert Mittleman Vocals: Jerome Brailey, Lenny Holmes, Skitch Lovett, Raymond "Bro" Carter Drums, Percussion, Syndrums: Jerome "Him Bad" Brailey Lead Guitar: Lenny Holmes Guitar: Skitch Lovett Bass Guitar, Smiles: Raymond "Bro" Carter All Keyboards, Semi-Vocals: Nat Lee Horns: "Major" Darryl Dixon, Marvin Daniels, Melvin El They had this funky-ass cut called "Lump", which can actually still be found of George Clinton's "Six Degrees of P-Funk" CD, which you can sample a bit of if you go here: 6 Degrees Of P-Funk Some details on Mutiny and "Mutiny on The Mamaship"
"Go Away From Here" is a mid-tempo song that is immediately noticable for its funky bass and distorted vocals. There's a nice dramatic buildup with the addition of a clever horn arrangement and a muted but wailing guitar. The song talks about faking the funk and such. "What More Can I Say" is another mid-tempo song in much the same mold, with the same muted guitar, great singing and another excellent horn arrangement. "Lump" is a hot dance-funk song. Jerome uses his funny, higher-pitched voice to dis Clinton ('Lump, lump can you cut the funk?' and 'Thinking you did something, realizing you ain't done a lot') and the Brides in a humorous fashion. The great slap bass keeps things moving. "Funk N Bop" is another fast funker, also amusing in the same vein. This one has a lot of great lyrical hooks, like 'The longer the stroke, the deeper the fill' and 'Sworn to fun, loyal to none'. The band absolutely locks in on this one, it's just a rock-hard funker. "Burning Up" is a mid-tempo funk ballad with more good vocal arrangements. "Voyage To..." is a more guitar-oriented song with whispered lyrics and crisp drumming. "Everytime You..." is a straightforward ballad with a strong guitar presence that highlights Jerome's singing. "Romeo" is a weird mid-tempo song with a funny chant and a more subdued lead vocal. The synth is the focus here, creating a strange tension. The beat is steady and holds the whole thing together. This album is out of print and somewhat rare, but it's available as an import from P-Vine. The cover shows Jerome on a beach, dressed as a pirate, recovering a treasure chest. An inside sleeve illustration has Jerome making Clinton (whom he calls 'Lump') walk the plank. The whole thing is pretty funny. Ace Records also apparently plans to reissue this album soon as well.
