The Soul-Jazz-Funk that Fuels Hip Hop ...
Just me with another tribute to the those grooves and the groovemeisters... The Mizell Brothers Charles Stepney Weldon Irvine and airbody else in that soul/jazz funked it up, Written off by Jazz Purists from the late 60's through the early 80's, This Music was wrought by the likes of the Mizell Brothers( Larry and Fonce), working with artists like Donald Byrd, Bobbi Humphrey, and Gary Bartz.. also music Maestro Charles Stepney and his work with Minnie Riperton, Rotary Connection, Tery Callier , Ramsey Lewis and of course, Earth Wind and Fire. Roy Ayers ruled the college airwaves, as well as The Crusaders, Ronnie Laws, and Emuir Deodato... Keyboardists like Herbie Hancock, George Duke, Dexter Wansel, Patrice Rushen, Lonnie Liston Smith, and Bob James were exploring the crosscurrents as well, up to Weldon Irvine and his Jamaica Queens, NYC disciples like Don Blackman, Bernard Wright, Tom Browne, and Lenny White. But between jazz purists' disdain, the conservative neo-Bop movement of the 80's, and the disco backlash of the same period, (not to mention the rise of the more vapid Smooth Jazz trends), alot of this music started to get left in the cut out bins. Other than die-hard fans and collectors, the music was largely forgotten--- The general public sure wasn't looking for it. But overtime, DJs and beatmakers started panning for gold, and found it in these electric grooves. Today you hear either the samples themselves or their direct influence thriving in production by the likes of Dilla, Common, Qtip and Tribe, Bilal, Kanye, 4 Hero, Pharoaoh Munche,, Pharrell, Dwele, Little Brother, Questlove, etc..... ... [Edited 10/3/07 15:03pm] Oh, Lawd, Yeah!!! That group was another Roy Ayers production--and anybody who's heard Tribe's "Bonita Applebum" has heard a combination of this and that first Rotary Connection album.... ... I personally agree with you on all of your choices but I think you are giving the "average" hip hop producer too much credit.. A more realistic source for beats/samples for "the average" dudes would be compilations like Ultimate breaks and beats vols 1-25 or the Dusty fingers comps.

True, I should have limited it to just the Dj's and beatmakers like those guys I mmentioned....for the average so-called "producers", it's probably easier to just grab beat compilations like those.... Nice pick with 24-Karat Black, by the way.... ... [Edited 10/4/07 7:57am] " I've got six things on my mind --you're no longer one of them." - Paddy McAloon, Prefab Sprout

I agree with that. Setting aside cats like PB Wolf, Madlib, MF Doom, Prince Paul, Primo, the late J Dilla, and Ghostface's Theodore Unit, many of the rap cats out there today sample samples. Now, I bet Soul, Jazz and Funk does more to fuel chillout/ambient/electronica/dance/wtc. than hip-hop. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

Probably, although I wasn't thinking of Rap per se--it's primarily the DJ culture that's creating the serious demand for alot of this...but I get your point, in Electronica (Downtempo, Broken Beat, Chill, whatever else), guys like Spacek, Marc Mac and Dego(4 Hero), Masters At Work, Hefner(Lee Jones), Kirk Digiorgio, Ian O'Brien, etc...they're all disciples.... ... thread Paligap.
I never thought i would say this, but i wish the rappers would go back to sampling. I know it's stealing others work. If done with taste an creativity, like the Bomb Squad (Chuck D), Hank Shocklee, Keith Shocklee and Eric "Vietnam" Sadler and Gary G-Wiz) use to do. I need to get this Deodato CD. And this Donald Byrd CD [Edited 10/4/07 18:33pm]

Just me with another tribute to the those grooves and the groovemeisters... Another very well done post Gap-Man. A few other 70s era Soul/Jazz/Funk groovemeister albums that may qualify... ...the majority leaning more towards Soul/Jazz & Jazz/Funk, but grooves of that era the hipper DJs would've still picked up on. A couple of these were released in '69, but the date don't stop the flavor. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn.
