In retrospect, his style sounds like rapping, but that's not what started the movement.
The style of Jamaican DJ's who toasted over riddims on the loudspeakers, which was transplanted to the South Bronx via Kool Herc, would be the roots of hip hop.

That's what inspired Kool Herc to get that shit going in the Bronx. Did you know Clive Campbell (aka Kool Herc) never made a dime from hip-hop and was last seen working in a breaker's yard? (well, apart from his rocking the 1's and 2's in Jin Tha Emcee's "Top 5 (Dead Or Alive)" video a couple of years ago.....wonder how Jin tracked him down? Will have to ask him next time I see him, Jin's my boy. |

I've heard all kinds of things, he works at UPS, bla bla. I'm sure a lot of artists end up with day jobs.

It just sucks that the guy who invented the whole thing never made jack shit from it. Although, I bet he's making some bank now, his "Sedgwick & Cedar" clothing line is really taking off, at least here in the UK. |
