Betty Wright fans?

I want to make a compilation of what's considered her greatest songs, I just know a few of the major ones. Are there any full length LP's of hers that deserve attention & any new stuff she's done by herself or with others...besides the new Angie Stone duet. Thanks. biggrin
tho' I battled blind
love is a fate resigned
memories mar my mind
love it is a fate resigned

Over futile odds
and laughed at by the Gods
and now the final frame
Love is a losing game

She gots to eat and if she wanted to get her paycheck outta Joss Stone's back, so be it,,,,nothing seemed to stuff her mouth when her stardom died in the 80's/90's.

Joss actually can sing. I wasn't hip to her music at all, until I accidentaly saw one of her live shows recently. She did a cover of Sugar Billy's "Super Duper Love", which is a deep Soul classic. She's got a tight band as well - a part of James Brown's former horn section (Hollie Farris and Jeff Watkins) are with her now.

Well, you brought up Joss, not me biggrin But anyway, have you seen her perform? I bet not. Homegirl definetely can sing. And I give her respect for her business as well. She manages herself, and thanks to her, some folks in the mainstream pick up on legends like Betty Wright and Gwen McCrae (who Betty got to sing background for Joss some years ago).

Betty was the bomb. Her releases on Alston and Cat between '68 and '77 are all winners.

I have seen her only that one time .. never heard her records, never have seen a TV appearance ... that one time, I was pleasently surprised how mature she sounded for such a young girly. I was actually watching her gig in the presence of a female Soul legend, and the lady said that she was impressed. Her words: "She'll never sound black, but she sure knows hot to sing". But in the end, it's always a matter of taste. If you don't like it - fine. But to say that she sounds like a goat is a bit harsh, especially coming from someone who seems to like Wendy and Lisa so much. razz

did i ever make claim to wendy and lisa having powerful vocal chords? no, but they know how to work what they have...they rely on lush harmonies to convey a sense of emotion...lisa (who has a very thin voice) uses dramatic flare to help tell a story via song...Dont Try To Tell Me is haunting because of this...She doesn't need to warble, screech and scream.

And that's the big difference between an artist like Wright and these teen-bob girls of today...these girls (Stone, Beyonce, Aguilar) haven't a fuckin clue how to tell a song via their voice...They think the louder and longer you scream the better the performance and that's bullshit.

Well, that's a better analysis than "sings like a goat", don't you think? That was what I found quite offensive. But what you still don't seem to understand is that Wendy and Lisa perform an entirely different musical style. Joss sings Soul music, and she expresses it the way she feels it - screeches and screams allowed. You simply prefer Wendy's and Lisa's style over that of Joss. And that's cool. Wendy and Lisa don't do anything for me. But I respect their talend and I would never compare them to grazing herd animals.

And to put Joss in the same bag with Beyonce and Christina indicates that you didn't really listen. Different styles, differeny concepts, different music.

So it's ok for you to bring up Joss Stone and compare her voice to that of a goat, but if I refer to Wendy and Lisa, you get offended and hyper-defensive?

i am not comparing styles...i am comparing the actual act of singing.

Once again, we are talking about differend styles of music, so it's hard to compare the act of singing. If Alice Cooper tried to cross over into Soul, his "actual act of singing" would be quite misplaced because he's used to a different musical style. Get my point?

not at all, my statement actually had relevance to this discussion. you brought up wendy and lisa just to make a cheap-shot at me personally. now, if wendy and lisa were to sing like the majority of todays pop acts (hyper warbling and screaming) then you might have a point..you might have caught a contradiction...but they dont and thus a unwarranted cheap-shot was made.

and yes, Josh Stone sounds like a goat...and so does Shakira...and so does an artist I actually like, Stevie Nicks...its a way to describe someone's vocal gimmick.

No, because style of music and style of singing are two totally different things. Betty Wright and Gladys Knight both sing soul music (something Joss Stone attempts) but I would never compare their vocals to what Stone does...Like I said, Stone, Aguilar and Beyonce rely on gimmicky warbling and screeching instead of vocal competence. Most of this generations singers are guilty of it.

If you feel that I mentioned Wendy and Lisa to launch a personal attack on you, you are mistaken. It was a mere reference to you qualification as someone who would find somebody's singing as "she sounds like a goat". Also, it was rather tongue in cheek, which I thought you would have understood, but you obviously took it quite personal. And please explain to me how Joss has any relevance on a Betty Wright thread? I don't really see that relevance, because the legacy of Betty Wright's massive work lies in the years between 1968 and 1977, not 25 years lader, when she collaborated with Joss.

I work in the music industry, but strangely enough I have never heard of "singing like a goat" as a ligid discription of vocal technique.

thats a rather odd statement to make. should i check with you in the future when using an analogy?

and i brought up wright because she championed stone by couching her and making press appearances with her. harlepolis got the connection.

It's quite obvious that you have issues with Joss Stone, or you would not have made this remark above. What I heard her sing was Soul music, plain and simple. No way to argue around that. You may not have liked it, but you can't change a musical definition because of your dislike.

I don't really have an opinion on Beynce's chops though. I have only heard her digitally enhanced music from the can, but never heard her live. Maybe she can sing well? I wouldn't know.

Not really an odd statement. If you show me some proof that "singing like a good" is an actual musical gimmick recognized in the music biz, I shall admit my ignorance on this matter and offer my apology.

And in regards to Stone's relevance on this thread - you brought her up in a negative way before you even mentioned that you knew Betty's "one big hit".
