and i brought up wright because she championed stone by couching her and making press appearances with her. harlepolis got the connection. Not really an odd statement. If you show me some proof that "singing like a good" is an actual musical gimmick recognized in the music biz, I shall admit my ignorance on this matter and offer my apology. And in regards to Stone's relevance on this thread - you brought her up in a negative way before you even mentioned that you knew Betty's "one big hit". are you reading this shit before you post it? And rightfully so, let's get back on topic. You could get her album"My First Time Around". However, this is a teenage record, she was young when she cutted. Her chops were already there, but not quite as mature. "Hard to stop" from 1973 is a killer, and so is "Betty Wright Live" (1977), which features the live version of "Tonight is the night". I also like "This time for real" from the same year, but it's a little bit more smooth compared to "Hard to stop".

Yeah, you are right, I didn't read the IMHO. I apologize. However, the "sings like a goat"- observation sounded like a pretty factual claim rather than an opinion.

I wasn't hip to her music at all, until I accidentaly saw one of her live shows recently. She did a cover of Sugar Billy's "Super Duper Love", which is a deep Soul classic. She's got a tight band as well - a part of James Brown's former horn section (Hollie Farris and Jeff Watkins) are with her now. I love her new single "Bruised But Not Broken" With more strong songs like this,Joss will be a superstar someday.

IMO, Betty Wright is more akin to 60s "singles" artists, so in terms of albums, that may not be the way to go.

For that reason, she got Gwen McCrae involved as well, both doing back-ups fo Joss. I don't think that Joss is the perfect choice, but the girl sure can sing. She's indpendent now, she manages herself and she recently has launched her own online radio show in which she will interview Soul legends from back in the day. She just interviewed Marva Whitney. Her agenda is to promote real music, to educate the mainstream kids about the legacy of Soul and to bring true talent back. For that reason alone, she does not deserve to be lumped into the crowd of Beyonce etc.

By the way, Clarence aka Blowfly is still doing his thing, he just finished a European tour. In the US, he plays rather shady clubs and bars. He could make much more money doing gigs as Clarence Reid, but he's already set and he doesn't care.

Yeah, I also do some booking so I worked with him. The cat is really hard to book. The show is even more nasty than the records. He still wears that silly costume, and he insults the people in the audience. He would pick out the ugliest and most obese lady in the audience, call her on stage, make her dance and tell her "You are the ugliest bitch in the room, wanna fuck?" You can imagine, it's hard to get gigs with that type of show, especially in the US.But lately, he agreed to also do a set as Clarence Reid. [Edited 10/21/07 13:26pm]
