Kelis has a new album coming out?! Wow that is cool. Wanderland didn't do that well and was TOO digital sounding. Little Suzie was an amazing song though.

I love Kelis. It's a shame Wanderland didn't come out in the US. I bought it on Amazon last October.

She's not on Virgin records anymore. Doing it on Star Trak/Arista.

I hear she's working with Diddy 2.

And is Janet coming back that soon? Cool!

I'm feeling the Meshell track on Red Hot + Riot. It came out Tuesday. This on is a tribute to African Artist Kemi Kuti, who died of Aids back in 98.
His son Fila helped put it together.
Res, D'Angelo, MAcy, Taj Mahal, Common, Dead Prez and Sade are on it. It's great.

Yeah the great selection of artists on Red Hot & Riot is bringing in whole fresh set of ears to the king of afro-beat. Wonder if many people even realise it's not a collection of new "neo soul" songs?

For me, the "digital sound" of Wanderland was nice. I LOVED the song "PERFECT DAY" on that record and I still play that song regularly (I probably played that track literally 300 times in the course of 6 months). I loved Mr. UFO Man and Little Susie.

Kelis never released Wanderland in the US because she was having a fall out with her now-former record company Virgin. Virgin Records is going through a "changing of the guard" after the Mariah Glitter Fiasco and a lot of the artists on Virgin got shafted as far as promotion and marketing. That's why no one heard of Wanderland. Kelis got tired of the mispromotion and mismarketing of her products and left with her friends the Neptunes to Star Trak Entertainment (a subsidiary of Arista). So "Wanderland" was unfortunately left in the rubble of her expedition to Arista/Star Trak. But, she's going to lift many of the tracks from Wanderland and retool them. The first single from her "Amphibious" album will be "Popular Thug" and also there's going to be a lot of live instrumentation on the album in the vein of N*E*R*D's retooled "In Search Of..." with Spymob. Expect a YOUNG, FRESH N' NEW direction from Kelis, expect the unexpected wink

You can currently hear Kelis in these projects that are out now...

-xXx soundtrack : N*E*R*D f/Kelis "Truth or Dare"
-Red, Hot + Riot: Kelis "So Be It"
-Clipse "When The Last Time" (Kelis does background vocals and appears in the video)
-Timo Maas featuring Kelis "Help Me" (a bangin' club song, be sure to listen to the "Deep Dish Ghost Mix" -- crazy)
-Noreaga featuring Kelis "Consider This"

I'm also interested in Mya's next album in Spring of 2003. She has a song on it entitled "Whatever Bitch" in which she talks in the vein of drag queens and female impersonators. It's supposed to be a tribute to them.

Oh, and for the ALANA DAVIS fans out there I got some good news for you...

Alana was sick of the direction her music career was taking under Elektra Records so she left them! I don't know the name of her new label, but she's working on new songs as we speak and her new album should drop Spring/Summer 2003.

I saw Alana in concert this past summer and she talked about how Elektra record dicked her and how they wanted her to "dumb down" her lyrics and make them more paletable for a TRL generation. That's why Fortune Cookies didn't do well, she was going through negoitations just like Kelis. She wanted more say so in her music.

Good thread! I love Amel Larrieux, Res and Alana Davis. I always felt it was a shame that more people are not aware of Alana -- I think she is an incredible talent (both of her albums are brilliant). I feel that Blame It On Me was the best release of 1997. Good to know that she is still recording.

I am also interested in hearing the Duran Duran comeback album.

Red Hot & Riot is an astonishing tribute album for the great Fela. What did you make of Kelis' joint 'So Be It' - arguably her greatest song to date.

it was on Red, Hot & Cool: Stolen Moments. It was the 2nd or 3rd red hot album (i think) and was a jazz/rap comp. Featured tracks by Michael Franti, Digable Planets, Incognito & Carleen Anderson, The Pharcyde

So when are those supposed to be released? It's about time
D'Angelo came with some new jams again.

I still listen to Voodoo on and off. Some of those songs
are really great. But I have to admit, I listen to the 1st
album a lot more, even after all those years now. Classic.
