Smokey Robinson Appreciation Thread

Listening to "Tracks Of My Tears" acapella version and I must say that I have enjoyed this man's music for years. He has written and sung some great songs-love Smokey. A true musical legend worship

One of my favorite bands, ABC, did a nice tribute to the man back in 1987 with "When Smokey Sings". smile

I also loved Smokey and Rick James' classic 80's duet, "Ebony Eyes".

I love him!!!b I got to meet him briefly in 2004 when he was promoting his line of food here in San Francisco. Very nice man. Not only was he an excellent singer, but he was a great songwriter, too. Here are some of my favorite songs (with and without the Miracles).

-Tears of a Clown
-Shop Around
-Going to a Go-Go
-Mickey's Monkey
-I Second that emotion
_You've really got a hold on me
-I Like it like that
-The love I saw in you was just a mirage
-Tracks of my tears
-Crusin
-Just to see her again
-Being with you
-Who's lovin You

The only song I really don't care for is Ooh baby baby.

Though Smokey Robinson wrote a lot of brilliant songs in his career, this is the album that is a defining masterpiece:

You seemed shocked. I feel Smokey Robinson made a lot of brilliant songs, but this was the album that hooked me on his music.

Sho nuff is. Though I couldn't totally say I dig all of Smokey's solo work. I ain't really forgave him for his work with Kenny G. lol

Other than that, my favorite Smokey solo cuts are as follows:
"Baby That's Backatcha"
"Baby Come Close" - the song Ne-Yo and Jennifer Hudson sampled for "Leaving Tonight"
"Quiet Storm" (of course)
"Cruisin'"
"Being With You"
"Ebony Eyes" - with "Slick" Rick James
"Just to See Her"
"Love Don't Give No Reason"

But I think it goes to say that he'll forever be known more for his work with the Miracles and for writing and/or co-writing all those wonderful Motown hits for others:

"Two Lovers", "You Beat Me to the Punch", "The One Who Really Loves You", "My Guy" (Mary Wells)

"I'll Be Doggone", "Ain't That Peculiar?", "One More Heartache" (Marvin Gaye)

"The Way You Do The Things You Do", "I Want a Love I Can See", "My Girl", "Get Ready", "Don't Look Back", "It's Growing", "Since I Lost My Baby" (The Temptations)

"Don't Mess With Bill", "My Baby Must Be a Magician" (The Marvelettes)

"Your Heart Belongs to Me", "A Breath-Taking Guy", "The Composer" (The Supremes)

"A Smile's Just a Frown Turned Upside Down" (Carolyn Crawford)

"Who's Loving You?" (The Temptations; the Jackson 5)

And my favorite Miracles tunes:
"Shop Around"
"You Really Got a Hold on Me"
"I'll Try Something New"
"Mickey's Monkey"
"Going to a Go-Go"
"Ooo Baby Baby"
"Tracks of My Tears"
"A Fork in the Road"
"Baby, Baby Don't Cry"
"More Love"
"I Second That Emotion"
"Tears of a Clown"

What about "Just My Soul Responding"? I love that track. Unfortunately, I lost the cassette I had, and so I haven't heard it in over a decade now. sad

I have to agree with Timmy84 -- I like Smokey Robinson's post-Miracles work in pieces; "A Quiet Storm" is the only solo album he made I liked from wire to wire. Among the solo songs Timmy named, other standout songs were "Tell Me Tomorrow" and "One Heartbeat."

There's another obscure 80s track he did called "Are You Still Here?" which was cool too.

It's nice but compared to the other tracks, I wouldn't include it in but it's nice though. I actually thought he was best as a songwriter and producer for others, especially the Temptations.

It's very similar with Babyface. 'Face's solo work overall was good, but like with Smokey Robinson the sheer volume and impact of their other work somewhat overshadow what they did for themselves. You have to look at Smokey and 'Face as the totality of their songs.

Co-sign! It was like both of them went into two extremes from great work with other people to just good work from their own productions on their own material.
