Sister Sledge's 1980 album 'Love Somebody Today'

I just bought the remaster of this album and I've been playing it for several days.Produced by Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers of Chic, this was their big follow-up to the massively successful 'We Are Family' album. It's not as disco as the previous album....it's slower, even jazzy at times.Highlights include the bouncy title track, the pensive "You Fooled Around" and "Easy Street".The first half of this album is amazing. The second half isn't as strong. The repetitive "Reach Your Peak" becomes tedious after a few minutes, and "Pretty Baby" isn't too inspiring. But they end the album on a high note: the bright "Let's Go On Vacation" is smooth and sleek, with dreamy vocals that remind me of a Broadway play for some reason.

Who else likes this album? Did anyone buy the remaster?

"Reach your peak" is briliant, my fav. track on the album.

All of the songs are good, especially "How to love" mushy

Did you buy the remasters? The only disappoining thing is the cheap packaging. There are no extensive liner notes, new interviews,or anything special. They don't even have the lyrics printed out, which is something that the original vinyl album came with.

So far,I only bought 'Love Somebody Today'.I'm gonna get 'All American Girls' next.I never heard that album....is it any good?

I remember hearing "He's Just A Runaway" on the radio in 1981.It was a very electronic-sounding song...kinda disco-ish.I guess this version flopped, because they remixed it and transformed it into a reggae version, calling it "a tribute to Bob Marley" confused I prefer the original version but I haven't heard it since 1981! On 'Greatest Hits' compilations, they always use the reggae version, which ticks me off.

I already had "All american girls" and "Love somebody today" (with good liner notes), but i bought the other CDs.

"All american girls" is okay, but i would rather recommend "The sisters"...

However, there`s a real gem on AAG, "Happy feelin`" music

I wish I had bought the 'Love Somebody Today' remaster in the mid-90s,from Rhino Records (which you have).I heard that it came with really good, extensive liner notes. These new remasters are cheaply packaged mad

I think this song is boring boxed Instead of that song, this album needed another strong uptempo jam for the second single.....something like "Have Fun (Again)" on Diana Ross' 'Diana' album (also produced by Chic). This album needed that song!

Copycat

This CD also contains one of Edwards and Rodgers' best ballads, the sorrowful, ethereal "How To Love".

I bought the Rhino reissues in the late '90s. And if I'm not mistaken, the Rhino CD of 'Love Somebody Today' is still in print. It's still listed on Amazon.com and it seems to always be on eBay for less than $15...new.

I like the album but it's not the record I was expecting. I think the sisters deserved either a more classically soulful record or a radically progressive sounding set of songs like Diana got [and didn't even appreciate]. Sometimes I listen to LST and wonder why. Even the sisters knew there was much room for improvement. If with nothing else...the lyrics..."I had corns on my feet"?hmm But they weren't assertive enough at this point to voice their opinions. The title track really only begins to groove after the sax solo, I tend to want to doze off after "You Fooled Around" (which should have been a single). "Reach Your Peak" snaps me out of the comatose state caused by "Easy Streeeeet". The funk workout continues with the unrelenting "Pretty Baby". The strings on "How To Love" are hypnotic but is there really a song there? "Let's Go On Vacation" is a fun jazzy album closer but no way was this single material. Not even as a last ditch, 3rd try for a hit. But what do I know? "Frankie" was a UK #1.eyepop

"Have Fun (Again)", in its released altered state, was sho nuff filler. But the orginal "CHIC Mix" is another story entirely. Insanely groovalicious!!! I read somewhere Bernard and Nile wanted this as the lead single.

Interesting analysis! I think, with this album,Bernard and Niles were trying to move the girls away from disco. Many artists back then were afraid of being thought of as a "disco act".Thus,'Love Somebody Today' is less dance-oriented than its' predecessor. In fact, the title track is the only real disco song on the record.I agree with you,"You Fooled Around" should have been a single.I think these songs should have been the singles,in this order:

"Got To Love Somebody"
"You Fooled Around"
"Let's Go On Vacation"

They released the tedious, repetitive "Reach Your Peak" as the second single and it went nowhere.I really think that Niles and Bernard should have given the girls a stronger uptempo song to open Side Two...something that could have been the "We Are Family" of this album.

I'm not too thrilled with any of the "Chic Mix" versions boxed I think Diana was smart to have the album remixed. On the Chic Mix,her vocals sound flat.

Afeter hearing the "CHIC Mixes" I can no longer stomach Russ Terrana's mix of 'diana'. It's such a violation of a work of art.

Really? Wow,I think the Chic mixes sound demo-like and unfinished.I was actually shocked when I first it.I couldn't believe that Niles and Edward were gonna release it that way.
