Wait, Lupe said he was raised on G-rap and thuggery? Then what the fuck is his ass doing skateboarding and shit? Oh yeah, Lupe -

nod Indeed. That was my exact reaction to his comment. His upbringing is the complete contradiction to the Young G lifestyle thats for sure.

Being from Chicago I have times where I deeply love and deeply resent it all at the same time. I don’t know what it is about Chicago heads that don’t like to seek out older material. I remember when I was in High School and everybody was deep into N.W.A’s second album and into Dre as a producer period. I was heavily into Parliament at the time (as I am to this day ) and folks would clown the shit out of me for listening to them. I was thinking if I was on the West Coast few people would laugh at me for listening to older material especially Parliament. Even if I pointed out where certain samples came from people would say stuff like, yeah but Dre made it sound better. I mean, maybe this is a Chicago thing amongst the younger generations, very ignorant.

Also The West Side is not that tough, try growing up on the southside but that’s a whole other thing to get into.

Nope

I used to live in the fucked up Englewood area not too far from Hope on 57th and Laflin . I just turned 32, before she went to hope she was my graduating principle at Hendricks Academy, little did I know at the time it would be the last graduation for a long time but anyway…., I saw her signature at my Grandmother’s wake who volunteered at the school, and that’s the closest I can get to an “autograph”

damn, i mean i did notice when Lupe fucked up the words on a song that a fan could have gone up there and rapped better than he did, but if he said all this shit on a thread about not liking Atcq and that he didn't want to honor them but was "forced" to.....then he got to be on my shit list. Somehow his whole statement sounds fake or something, like how in the hell could that be coming out of his mouth...of all people. I'm lost on this one.....
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

My brother posts on okay player, from what I have read and heard this has been an ongoing issue that has already become overblown. Questlove would post on the board urging Lupe to listen to Midnight Marauders, and Lupe would state that he is not interested.

so okay well damn, what does he have against them then? I don't get it. I rarely even find a regular person who doesn't like ATCQ. Most people I come in contact with love Q-tip. For a person whose songs are constantly leaked online, this isn't a very good way for Lupe to start off his career....

SirPsycho

just reading some of ya'll responses....how many of ya'll actually heard all of food & liqour (lupe's album)....his claim of having grown up mainly into ganster rap is not that far off....this whole skateboard thing is an obvious angle labels tried to push to the forefront in an attempt to attract a target audience (not that lupe didn't already pen the song as a tribute to his skater friends, but he'll tell you himself he aint no skater for real)...his writing style is more akin to N.W.A. vs. ATCQ if one really cares to look...I can understand VH1's choice of him to tribute since his current position (or stance) is more akin to the DAISY movement of the 90's...but I don't find any fault in what he was saying there....for whoever said the backpacker thing, it's a relatively new term, so it wouldn't have been said during Tribe's era.... I do think it was dumb for him to feed into a thread on okayplayer but whatever....and he def shouldn't have name dropped but he was obviosly getting emotional...I can't imagin himhaving it easy in today's musical climate writing the way he is....

and as a serious emcee myself...I really dont think the fumbles were that bad...I was like "who don't know the words to scenerio?" but if you can forget your own lyrics (which any performer can attest to) then anything is possible...but again, on some emcee shit, I think he recovered for his slip ups better than Nas did when he cover "Dear Mama" for 2pac's tribute...AND WHERE WAS THE BACKLASH FOR THAT SHIT? REALLY?
