"Certified True" was the song produced by R.J.'s Latest Arrival (I still have the 12" version). It was the song with the mechanical, hip-hop-inspired drum patterns. It wasn't a bad song, it just didn't have that new wave/funk-inspired stuff of their late 1970s through mid-1980s stuff. I think they released "Freaky Behavior" as the second single because they wanted to get some of that Rick James success that was happening at the time. That song is definately "Super Freak" influenced and Rick was on fire that year.
I wouldn't have objected to "Freaky Behavior" being a third single from "Nightcruising," after "Hit and Run" and "Traffic Jammer." I feel "Hit and Run" was the right choice as the lead single; "Traffic Jammer" was a little too hardcore and rock-oriented at that time for black stations to be a first single, but the success of "Hit and Run" definitely would have loosened up things and it would have been a perfect follow-up single. [Edited 10/10/07 21:15pm] Yeah hit and run was the right choice as the lead single. I would have liked traffic jammer to be the followup single. I may be in the minority here but i would have liked the title cut nightcruising, which is rick jamish also, as the third single. It just has a nice groove to it and lyrically it pretty much was the soundtrack of all guys lives who were in high school or college around that time. I like freaky behavior a lot but it just sound more like a b side as opposed to an album single imo. Don't laugh at my funk

I agree with you; I liked the title track "Nightcruising" better than "Freaky Behavior." My problem with "Freaky Behavior" is that it was too much of a Rick James knockoff to take seriously without calling The Bar-Kays rip-off artists.
