Calvin Harris: Yay or Nay?

He seems to be seen as some kind of messiah of pop/dance by some people I know!

Opinions?

(The American orgers can also post on pop related threads...there's music beyond shit-hop!)

For those who don't know him...here's a video:

Calvin Harris - Acceptable In The 80s

That's my favorite Calvin video out of the 3 currently.

"Colours" is the next single. I'm curious if there's going to be a video for that or just radio/club-only.

Calvin's ICD is My LIFE in 2007. Whenever I think about this year, I will think about his album.

It's funny, I went out last Friday and I told the DJ, "Play some Simian or Calvin!" He threw on Acceptable In The 80s and I LOST IT. lol

I was acting A CERTIFIED FOOL. lolllll

But it was cool.

Here's two clips from the concert I went to last month (I can hear myself singing in 'The Girls' clip):

The Girls, Live @ the Mercury Lounge, NYC 9.12.07

I like the song "Girls" too. Why is the album getting bad reviews?

I was talking about this with a few people recently...

I think people are being too hard on ICD. Especially the magazine critics in the UK.

It's a lot of political shit. And a lot of it doesn't have to do with Calvin.

It's a FUN album. I have fun with it. It's a party record. I'm not sitting here trying to get messages from it or overanalyze the lyrics. I dance to it and have fun with it, plain and simple.

I can see why the novelty factor of tracks like "The Girls" and "Acceptable" can have some folks cringing -- especially my UK folks -- but if you approach it in a noncerebral way, you can really lose your mind to this album.

Hearing "Disco Heat" at a dance club recently with slower BPMs really made me appreciate that track a lot. Also, I think NME and mags like that are mainly giving him shit because he openly and unapologetically dissed Bloc Party. So what? Plus, I think that was a dumb reason for the NME editors to blacklist him given they create their own friggin' 'movements' ("New Rave") and arbitrarily pump and dump acts at whim (Klaxons).

Also, some of the older heads in the dance community are having a hard time adjusting to the current changes in the dance scene -- especially since indie dance is making so much noise and he was discovered on MySpace, so heads have problems with that -- and they see him as an example of MySpaceization of dance music or whatever. I've heard the term "bedroom producer" thrown around a few times. I mean, really, how do folks think movements get started? Like what a young Grandmaster Flash was doing in his kitchen... I guess that was a real load of shit to the critics back in 1978. Ha. Lots of folks have a hard time dealing with change.

My standouts are NEON ROCKS, Acceptable, Girls (mostly all of the 1st side of the album kicks my ass). The whole section from Merrymaking to Disco Heat I can dance my ass off to.

New Rave doesn't exist imo. Just something NME made up.
