Miles

Here's a few lesser known P-Funk gems I've long dug -

Music For My Mother - Cool, skipping deep blues funk of the highest order imo - I'm sure prince borrowed the tripped out, wah wah intro for his 'Hallucination Rain' 'NPG' track. 'I'm agin'. Old funk!' cool

Also, from the very under-rated 'Funkromicon' compilation from 1995, featuring some obscure early '90s P-Funk golden greats -

Orbitron Attack - Eddie Hazel's last stand (or not far off anyway). A both feet on the ground, roll up your sleeves 12 minute plus exercise in raw funk rock. It seems to be saying 'Come on if you're hard enough!'biggrin Great drumming from the Mutinous Mr Bigfoot Brailey, and Boots and Bernie pivotal passengers on Eddie's last astral voyage into guitar nirvana.

If 6 was 9 - Yes, the Hendrix song, covered by Bootsy in a kind of trip-hop meets funk style biggrin. A modern kind of deep blues funk with background guitar ambiences and fx that seem to be invoking the spirit of Hendrix (who of course Bootsy's 'stoned scatological lover-man' persona has been lovingly aping since the early mid '70s. This imo has some of Bootsy's best bass playing in years - super-supple, funky in surprising places and never losing that 'one'. An excellent reinvention of a classic.

Cosmic Slop ('Funkromicicon version') - I like the Funkadelic original, but for me, perhaps sacreligiously, this is THE version of the song. Great brooding blues funk atmosphere, killer funk grooving from reggae rhythm masters Sly and Robbie, deep, soulful guitar from Michael Hampton and wonderful lead vocal from either Mudbone Cooper or Gary Shider. One of my all-time favourate P Funk tracks. This song somehow always seems to me to be P-Funk's version of 'Papa Was a Rolling Stone', at least lyrically, but only if 'Papa' was a 'Momma' wink.

You also get 'Maggot Brain Pt 2' (almost smile) in 'Pray My Soul/ Sacred to the Pain', the latter part with soul-searing poetry from one of the Last Poets. Eddie Hazel's final masterpiece?

Imo 'Funkronomicon' is a must-buy for fans of latter-day P-Funk. It also has appearances from Maceo, George Clinton, Bobby Byrd eek (even Sly turns up for a few seconds - like his recent concerts then smile cool). Tighten it up, bring in Billy Nelson and lose a few of the weaker tracks of this double album, it's almost the great'90s album Funkadelic never made.

Anybody else dig this record or any other post '70s P-Funk? They may not be as consistently great as the '70s, but these guys still had/ have it in 'em from time to time.

It certainly knocks spots of Bootsy's last album proper, on which he barely touched the bass at all. mad

For me, Parliament/Funkadelic is HIGHLY spiritual. Their influence on me as a musician, songwriter and producer can't be put into words. I've ADORED the Funk Mob since I was 7 years old. I was blessed to see them live with my older cousin in 1978 when I was a kid. Have seen them MANY times after that. My band, Amalgam, actually got to open up for Bootsy at the House of Blues out here in L.A. To list "favorite" songs would be like having children and picking favorites one over the other. I can't do that because I dig them so much as a "whole". Sure, I may jam "How Do I View You" the most from Tales like I may jam "You Scared The Lovin" a lot from Hardcore, where I may only jam "Sir Nose D'Void" and always back to back P-Funk Wants to get Fucked Up followed by the cut Mothership Connection. When I speak on Free Your Mind and Maggot Brain albums,..well...that's usually too deep for me to properly put into words. My love for those albums are that severe. Although I've tried several times on here in the past.
