When I comment on these things, I shouldn't take it too seriously. I mean, yea, you prolly need to know me personally to know that I don't mean that stuff 100% seriously. I do realize that it might occasionally come off as a bit 'snobbish' or seem like I'm trying to be the 'Funk Authority' 'round here, but trust me, that's not what I'm after.

I'm glad to read that. I think you're a good guy but sometimes it rubs me the wrong way the way you might dismiss something as "that ain't shit!" It sounds less like an opinion and more like a decree. Some of us are too sensitive, perhaps.

Yea, you kinda have to know me IRL to know I ain't too serious about that shit. If I post stuff like that, you shouldn't take it too seriously wink

To Najee and Funkenstein, there's no need to keep arguing back and forth. I ranked "Atomic Dog" as my no.1 and that's my opinion. Funk has his no.1 and that's okay. No need to keep lounging over this. Actually Najee, I think he has good taste in music from what I've seen over the past months on this org. As a matter of fact, he has heard some stuff I never heard of and curious to see his record collection. So fellas keep the peace.

eek
Thanks smile
I guess I do have some rarities and stuff that most people haven't heard of in my collection, even though it's not that big (yet wink).
I'm kinda concentrated on one area (mostly funk in my collection lol) so that helps

That's funny, because I know people who were buying Parliament/Funkadelic's music when it was coming out in the early 70s and actually saw them perform during their prime. And most of them rank "Atomic Dog" was one of their very best songs, if not their favorite song.

I'm going to give them a lot more clout than someone who appoints himself an authority on something on a music period which is based on third-hand accounts. Like I said, I really don't need the self-deluded opinion of the proposed white, non-U.S. professor of African-American 70s music.

I don't claim to be a professor of 70s African-American music smile
I have listened to a whole lot of the aforementioned music so I see myself as qualified to speak my mind about the subject. Were we talking about, say 80s white rock, I might aswell shut the fuck up since I haven't listened to any.
Yes, some of us are not fortunate enough to have seen P-Funk in their prime, but that's not really something I can do anything about. I can, however, put the needle to the wax and listen to the stuff they made back then.
My initial response to LoDog's list was not meant in a 'ONLY I KNOW WHAT GOOD MUSIC IS. YOU DON'T GET TO RATE ATOMIC DOG THIS HIGH!!1' type of thing. I was more like surprised that the cut in mention, made the top of his list, because I personally, do not rank it that high and don't consider it a masterpiece. Everybody got their own opinion about music, that's what it all boils down to in the end. As much as I hate some shit like, say Nirvana, it might mean the world to some other person. If I say I don't like a particular cut, it doesn't mean that someone else is not allowed to like it. That's just how I feel about it.

I SAW P-FUNK MAY 20TH 1977 AND HAVE BEEN INTO THEM FOR 32 YEARS. ATOMIC DOG IS PURE GENIUS. LISTEN CLOSELY TO THE VIDEO GAME SOUNDS IN THE BACKGROUND,DOG SCRATCHING...IT'S ATOMIC DOG IS AN ARCADE GAME, A NATURAL INSTINCT TO PURSUE WOMEN ETC. ATOMIC DOG IS STILL PLAYED 25 YEARS LATER IN ALL CLUBS AROUND THE COUNTRY. IT HAS AN INNOVATIVE RHYTHM AND TONE NOT TO BE DUPLICATED. ONE OF GC'S MOST SAMPLED RECORDS....NOT TOO MENTION ALL THE JARGON THAT HAS BEEN CREATED JUST FROM THAT TUNE.

YOU ARE "WRONG" YOUNG FUNKENSTEIN

Again, an emphasis that this person is not the self-proclaimed authority on funk music he think he is. Again, the fact that some people on the Org actually look at someone barely 20 years old, white and living in (I believe) in the Netherlands as some "expert" on the genre is as nearly hilarious as his "decree" that "Atomic Dog" wasn't that great of a song.
THE TRAFFIC JAMMERS, The Org's house band: VAINANDY -- lead singer; NAJEE -- bass; THE AUDIENCE -- guitar; PHUNKDADDY -- rhythm guitar; ALEX de PARIS -- keyboards; Da PRETTYMAN -- keyboards; FUNKENSTEIN -- drums. HOLD ON TO YOUR DRAWERS!

I said you feel "Atomic Dog" wasn't "that great of a song." I have seen on more than one occasion when you have admonished someone for picking the song on one of these type of lists, in a "WTF were YOU thinking?" tone. It's not merely a matter of you thinking the song is not "all that" -- you act like people have lost their minds for finding the song relevant.

You have no context or application in terms of life experience with these songs, and then you try to pass off your opinion as some authority. It's more than a matter of you liking certain music -- you actually think you're more knowledgable than most people, when in reality your knowledge is not based on memory but looking up the stuff through third-party sources. In a way, it's condescending and insulting -- particularly to those who actually have the life experiences on which to draw.

It certainly was not the context I was applying, and you know that.

What I said in my previous posts applies when the person in question tries to act as an authority on a music subgenre that already run its course before he was born, and then tries to make "decrees" on what people should like from certain artists. The lack of context applies particularly with the song "Atomic Dog," which he thinks that because he doesn't like that means it is not a song most Parliament/Funkadelic fans should not like.

Isn't that what pretty much everybody does? lol
People read books to learn stuff. Not many of us were around at, say the Middle Ages, but still there are people who are experts on the subject. Guess how they learned all they know... yea, that's right, books, studying & research.

I don't think "being there at the time" necessarily make someone more of an authority, anyone can hear great music and be moved by it.

But it gives a different perspective because you might associate it with the times. Sometimes it's hard to hear why certain music is important if you don't understand the circumstances surrounding it. But great music should (& does) transcend the times & the culture.

Anyway, I think Atomic Dog is great (but then I'm old!)
