Says someone who wasn't born when either song was created. This is where that discussion we had about you supposedly being an expert on stuff for which you have no context is becoming apparent.

Can you stop with that retarded shit already, ok man?
Also, why do you say 'either song', we ain't talking about two particular songs, now are we? We are comparing Atomic Dog to Parliament's 70s output.
Anyways, I've listened to Atomic Dog and the stuff they released as Parliament. Even though I wasn't born in back then, I still have a working pair of ears, dude. Atomic Dog is nowhere near as good as, say, Mothership Connection, Dr. Funkenstein, Funkin' For Fun, Unfunky Ufo, Handcuffs, Night Of The Thumpasorus Peoples, Funkentelechy, Flashlight, Bop Gun etc etc.

Also, I don't want no beef with you, bro. If you don't like me, fine. You don't have to bring this shit up every time we are in the same thread.
Besides, 'Cause you weren't born back then, you don't get to have an opinion', is a really stupid argument. Wouldn't be a whole lot of talking going on if what you're saying was used as a criteria for who gets to speak their damn mind and who doesn't. Say you were a religious person, you wouldn't be allowed to talk about Jesus. You weren't there when it happened wink

That's funny, because I know people who were buying Parliament/Funkadelic's music when it was coming out in the early 70s and actually saw them perform during their prime. And most of them rank "Atomic Dog" was one of their very best songs, if not their favorite song.

I'm going to give them a lot more clout than someone who appoints himself an authority on something on a music period which is based on third-hand accounts. Like I said, I really don't need the self-deluded opinion of the proposed white, non-U.S. "professor" of African-American 70s music.

Son, I was born in the late 1960s. I actually bought Parliament-Funkadelic songs from the latter 70s and remember first hearing "Standing on the Verge of Getting It On" when my uncle used to play it.

So yes, on this subject I'm a more credible resource than you (someone born in the mid-80s) any day of the week. Hell, I got credit cards as old as you.

I don't claim to be a professor of 70s African-American music smile
I have listened to a whole lot of the aforementioned music so I see myself as qualified to speak my mind about the subject. Were we talking about, say 80s white rock, I might aswell shut the fuck up since I haven't listened to any.
Yes, some of us are not fortunate enough to have seen P-Funk in their prime, but that's not really something I can do anything about. I can, however, put the needle to the wax and listen to the stuff they made back then.
My initial response to LoDog's list was not meant in a 'ONLY I KNOW WHAT GOOD MUSIC IS. YOU DON'T GET TO RATE ATOMIC DOG THIS HIGH!!1' type of thing. I was more like surprised that the cut in mention, made the top of his list, because I personally, do not rank it that high and don't consider it a masterpiece. Everybody got their own opinion about music, that's what it all boils down to in the end. As much as I hate some shit like, say Nirvana, it might mean the world to some other person. If I say I don't like a particular cut, it doesn't mean that someone else is not allowed to like it. That's just how I feel about it.

Sorry, son, but most people I know consider George Clinton's "Atomic Dog" a long-standing great song -- and most of those people I know were P-Funk fans from the start of their run. That song still gets played at parties and turns out people on the dancefloor.

Your problem is you try to pass your opinion on 70s funk music like it has to be approved by you. Just because you created some contradictory internal logic than anything beyond 1982 is inferior doesn't mean other people will agree with you. Don't comment on other people's choices like "WTF were YOU thinking?" -- particularly if you don't like being called out on it.

Oh and, I'm really not claiming to be the #1 authority on funk or a more credible rescource than you. All I'm doing is speaking my mind. Voicing my opinion. If I say, for example, that 'apples are better than oranges', doesn't mean that I think that what I just said is the 'Universal Truth'. That's just my opinion. You have every right to have your own opinion, and so do I.

This is from someone pulling something out of his ass that I wasn't around when P-Funk was a dominant music force in the '70s. There is nothing to underestimate -- I listened to most of these songs when they were popular, you downloaded them off the Internet nearly 30 years later and needed some third-hand account to give you context.

You're free to give your opinion, but I sure as hell don't have to respect it from someone coming from the outside looking in.

That's exactly what I ain't trying to do lol
When I comment on these things, I shouldn't take it too seriously. I mean, yea, you prolly need to know me personally to know that I don't mean that stuff 100% seriously. I do realize that it might occasionally come off as a bit 'snobbish' or seem like I'm trying to be the 'Funk Authority' 'round here, but trust me, that's not what I'm after.

Yes, that's what people do, they look it up. Of course, it's not exactly the same as actually being there, but what really matters in the end is how I (or you, in your case) feel about a particular song. The songs still sound the same as they did thirty years back. Atomic Dog just doesn't do it for me. I like a more organic sound to music, but that's just me. Different strokes for different folks.

You sure as hell weren't buying the music when it came out, either -- were you (which was the whole point)?

The bottom line is people don't have to rationalize their choices to you, particularly on a song that universally is considered an essential song in the Parliament/Funkadelic catalog. You actually think EVERYONE looks at "Atomic Dog" as something inferior, when in reality you're the minority (pun intended) on that song. Believe it or not, the original core audience of that enclave looks at it as one of their very best songs.

You are exactly right. They don't, but I still have the right to express myself, dig? I'm not in any way trying to discredit y'all, cause you happen to like a song that I don't. I have tremendous respect for a whole bunch of the old school cats around here. I've learned a lot from them.

To Najee and Funkenstein, there's no need to keep arguing back and forth. I ranked "Atomic Dog" as my no.1 and that's my opinion. Funk has his no.1 and that's okay. No need to keep lounging over this. Actually Najee, I think he has good taste in music from what I've seen over the past months on this org. As a matter of fact, he has heard some stuff I never heard of and curious to see his record collection. So fellas keep the peace.
Peace and be wild!

I'm glad to read that. I think you're a good guy but sometimes it rubs me the wrong way the way you might dismiss something as "that ain't shit!" It sounds less like an opinion and more like a decree. Some of us are too sensitive, perhaps.
