Question about Madonna and Erotica I have a question for those who are more familiar with this album.
Was one of her purposes in creating this album to reflect the importance of gay culture in her music and performance? In particular, can someone explain to me the music video for "Deeper and Deeper"? Thank you!

Honestly I don't know the answers to your questions but I just want to say that to my ears EROTICA is STILL the best Madonna album ever.

In some ways, yes. Just listen to the words to Why's It So Hard.

Erotica was her doing her pop sound with the NY Underground. She wanted to do an album of sexuality but the cold nonromantic part of it.
Deeper and Deeper is an homage to old Andy Warhol films. You CANNOT use the name of God, or religion, to justify acts of violence, to hurt, to hate, to discriminate- Madonna

Do you know what the balloons stand for in the music video for "Deeper and Deeper"? I'll have to check the video again it's not one of my favorite videos. I prefer Bad Girl and Rain from that era. just from the intro, which i forgot there was one, i'd say it's innocence lost. like the harliquin in the Girlie Show. Except in the Girlie Show we learn at the end that innocence is never lost just forgotten. For me the Erotica is the peak of Madonna's brilliance. After that she went downhill and became a piece of shit!

After Vogue she did Justify My Love and it shocked people. She wasnt at all innocent or anything in the beginning but that was when she really "pushed it".
When Erotica came out (along with Sex Book) it was all about the art of dark sexuality. Something that NO ONE..especially a top bill female artist had covered. Yet in still by 1993 (3 years after Justify My Love), people were turned off by Madonna being the 'nasty sex queen'. The album itself was kind of a journey in2 underground hip hop beats....over spoken word, acid jazz, and some moody slow numbers...this was the break-in sound for Madonna to capture on the Bedtime Stories album. here is the youtube interview about that era. She seemed...not all there..or even happy at that time.... http://youtube.com/watch?v=duNSaHJsgck Straight Jacket Funk Affair

However, she says she doesn't regret it and won't appologize for it. I think almost every interview in the past couple years has had the interviewer asking her if she regrets Sex/Erotica and it's always the same answer. I’m glad she doesn’t apologize for any of it. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

it irrates me to know end to see people always asking her if she regrets it and wants to appologize for it. Almost like the media wants to show her how wrong she's been in life about the role of women and sex in society. Looking at the book now that I'm much older I found it incredibly brave and I never understood the 'fear' over Justify My Love. I hate when people apologize for their art. If it offends you then it's not for you. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

However there were many images a head of their times. and with the hysteria about AIDS at the time there she is running around with Joey Steffano. She shouldnt ever apologize...that makes her who she is. You either love Madonna or hate Madonna. That's why she can sell out stadiums with ticket prices going from $100 - $500 a pop. All that helped her career 2 me. It was the dark era, and it was beautiful watching her open all the way from 1990 - 1996 when Ray Of Light came out.....like seeing a new woman. it's my favorite concert of hers. If he's gay he'll love it. Otherwise he'll see it for the pointless nonsense it is. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

'Erotica' is my favorite Madonna album.I like the fact the music is dark and moody throughout...it's not exactly a "bright" dance album. This album is also very "New York",which was intentional. At this point, she was tired of the slick,L.A. studio pop sound.
"Words" is an underrated gem.

The "Erotica" and "Vogue" eras are definately Madonna at her best. She had the gay house music going on and she was just as wild, outrageous, and offensive as we are. That's when she was a bad bitch and didn't give a damn. She should return to that era. Andy is a four letter word.

Now she is boring and tries her best to be the female Bono.

Now she is boring and tries her best to be the female Bono. I didn't care for her "Confessions On A Dance Floor" album. When I heard it was going to be a modern disco type album, I was thinking she was going back to the house music like she did during the "Vogue" and "Erotica" days. Instead, it was an acid, techno, trance type album. When house music started getting all trance sounding, that's when I stopped listening to it. In the 1990s, we had a black gay club on one side of the street and a white gay club directly accross the street. The black gay club's house music was funky type house music like Black Box, Cee Cee Penniston, etc. The white gay club's house music was more European sounding and they played acts like Depeche Mode. They also played a lot of house music but it didn't sound like the black house music. It was actually too fast to dance to and all people could do on the dance floor was hop around like rabbits. Madonna's "Confessions" album had that same vibe of the white gay club's house music. Now, all the older black gay people go to the white gay club because the black club plays nothing but shit hop. I can tolerate the trance but I'm not going to stay five minutes in a room with shit hop, let alone pay an admission price to help support it. Andy is a four letter word.

A lot of gay people live their entire lives being whores. She could do it and get away with it. Divorce the husband, give him custody of the child, and return to being a slut. No, when I said return to those days, I meant return to making that type of music. Andy is a four letter word.
