PRESUMING these artists have not received it and it CAN be awarded posthumously (even if it never has):
John Coltrane Thelonious Monk Miles Davis Ella Fitzgerald My candidates (whom I think have not received it but do not keep track): Al Green Bruce Springsteen Wynton Marsalis (yeah, I know, but still.) Prince (a long shot, but still) Are there any hip-hop acts that you think COULD earn one? I say it will be at least another 20 years before anyone even THINKS about that. The hip-hop honoree would have to be an act that has had some commercial success and made some meaningful and positive work. Run-DMC and Common are the ones that comes to mind first.
