I was disgusted about this too. I'm not a native, but the Sam store in downtown Toronto was an institution!
If I understand correctly, the city has made the storefront a protected landmark so that the giant spinning neon records cannot be removed. Somebody's gonna have a funky condo one day. I don't think the closure stems from lack of artist support, though, so much as rising alternative ways to purchase music. I'm torn: I like the convenience of downloading Joni or Meshell's new projects, but if the option ever completely left, I'd miss the experience of walking to some dusty neighborhood shop, rubbing shoulders with B-boys and punks with blue hair, flipping through the bins and picking up some cool, new title. Ok I feel better hearing that the record will still be up there, but I'm going to miss going there to find cheap Prince CD's and Jackson singles that I never found anywhere else. | |
