chili peppers were great and funky in the 80s. whatever the reasons it dont matter. u think ur clever cuz u say peppers are funky cuz of flea? yeah, so?? so they were funky and u admit it. so what if they werent? they were making funk-punk-rock.

kiedis is a supergreat frontman btw. same with perry farrel or angelo moore.

I said 'the reason why people call RHCP funky...' wink

Kiedis is a horrible frontman and a horrible vocalist.

and i said why do u care about what people say??

yeah and jagger is a shit frontman too.

ur not into rock punk , right?

u probably think iggy sucks too haha

White people can be funky too, just look at AWB. RHCP, however is not one of those bands. Like pfunkjazz said in a previous post, most of RHCP's so called 'funk' comes from Flea's slap bass. Yes, he might be a skilled bass players, but I dislike his aggressive playing style.

Funny to bring up race. If I'm corect SteiN himself is Euro-Caucasoid.
I'm sure he'll clarify if I'm in error.

I think the question was raised because Funkenstein said funk didn't include "stupid whiteys jumping around naked"

This thread just goes to show you can't put a label on funk. Either we think it's funky or not, and nobody can argue anyone out of their opinions.

I remember the thread "The Beatles Were FUNKY!" and while I'm as big a fan as anyone, I had to laugh at that.

Although I have outgrown most of the early stuff now, I will say I dare you to find another band that has pushed more artists then them.

In every interview, Flea and John quote classic funk albums and musicians of all genres that they admire. They turned me on to Fela.

And for all of you who have stayed away because of Kiedis's singing and some so so material. Stadium Arcadium is fantastic. This is no longer Flea's band. Frusciante is running the show and the layers of stuff he is doing is worth the price of admission. And for the most part Kiedis is singing in key.

I was one foot out the door with them, until Frusciate's solo albums restored my faith, and then Stadium is their best since Blood Sugar.

Is it 100% funk, punk, or rock?. Who cares. It's music..... for all you who want to stay in boxes that are tightly wrapped and easy to know what you got. Enjoy!
Music is the best...

There's a lot to criticize about them, but what I like is that they are a real band.

They have a clear style, and a clear concept. They are free to do whatever and they have always been about that. Funk when they should be doing rock, rapping when they should be singing, focusing on bass when everyone knows guitar is the lead instrument. They still are holding to that freedom, free to do "bland pop" when other people think they should be doing funk.

Anthony isn't the greatest singer, never has been, but he helped define who the chili peppers are, for better or worse. It's always been about him & flea. They're Mick & Keith, John & Paul. They ARE the chili peppers, even though some are gonna argue for Hillel or John. They didn't audition some pro singer for the band, they formed a band out of friendship.

I love the chili peppers, warts & all, because they are what they are & make no apologies. They're a group, of musicians, of people, that you can trace the evolution of. And they're fearless, something I think George Clinton liked about them.

There are other more musical groups of musicians, like the NPG, but they don't come across like a unit. The Chili Peppers are a unit. A cohesive band.

And I'm the one that started that thread. Why? Because I do believe that the Beatles did have some songs that were pretty funky and groovy, especially with Ringo's beats. Sure, you may laugh, but I don't care. The fact was even the lads from Liverpool were influenced by Soul and Funk.

Funk is all about a feeling and a groove. But the problem is you guys keep associating Funk with the brothers and sisters from 70's and 80's. Funk goes beyond that. If it makes you move, and has a groove, then it's funky. And even with all the Rock/Punk attitude and machismo, the Chili Peppers still had the funk.

The thing with folks like Funkenstein and Graycap is that they're puritans and traditionalists. They're threatened by any change of the funk that they're used to hearing.

Right, I didn't actually mean to pick on you. I was trying to point out that people's definitions of funk vary pretty wildly. I think the Rolling Stones & AD/DC can be funky, and even Come Together or Drive My Car.

But I did kind of laugh, because I'd never think to call the Beatles funky.

Exactly! The problem is, with these cats, and a whole bunch of other 80's & contemporary 'funksters', there is NO FEELING and NO GROOVE. I can listen to them and FEEL NOTHING. Funk is supposed to hit you in a certain way. These guys ain't hittin', they're missin'.

I wouldn't mind a change, if it were for good. What supposedly passes for funk these days is just emotionless bullshit in my ears

Stank Love was better than I expected. Still, I'm not really *feeling* the cut.

Bad Note... tooooo much geeeetarr. Not really 'funky' imo. More like a guitar-drenched mood piece.
