To be honest, I have no idea.

Out of the most commercially successful acts right now (Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Amy Winehouse, Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, Pink, etc.), I am not seeing a whole lot of potential. Who knows?

The great artists of today will not be found in the mainstream. To answer this question you need to completely ignore the charts. Most likely today's great new artists (if they're out there) are toiling away in obscurity. Certainly there are HUNDREDS of cats out there wiping the floor with mainstream artists, and getting no recognition whatsoever. Laura Veirs is a good example of that.

Makes perfect sense. nod Do you think any of these underground artists will ever get the recognition they deserve?

Some will, some won't. I suspect there are a few Nick Drakes out there who will be revered in decades to come, but who are being ignored now. Who these acts will be, I have no idea. All I do know is that the talent and the vision in music is to be found outside the mainstream, not in it.

I didn't really want to limit this to being out of mainstream artists. If you see potential in a more unknown artist, then list them. Every artist is welcomed to be discussed.

Arcade Fire,White Stripes (not indie or new anymore but still awesome), the Wrens (not new but their cd, awesome, Jeff Buckley, As Tall As Lions,Wheat, Gomez, Jeff Finlan, Eastmountainsouth and just a whole lot of cats in the NYC art rock scene taht you probably will never hear of...
For some reason their has been this emergence of singer/songwriter musicians doing something so different from the pop mainstream...
that people who are tired of pop are following them...

And thats really jusst the rock scene i can dig deeper if i go to downtempo, trip hop, and this movement call Rok N Blues coming in from brooklyn...
Cats playing old style marvin gaye type of harmonies & melodies over thick counting crowish foo fighter rock tunes...
creative stuff...

Yesi am, that's why there is reason behind my pretentious observations...
People usually don't whats out there so they have to deal with posers like The Fray, and stuff...
But u can't compare How to save a life with stuff like My body Is a Cage, by arcade fire, which is awesome...
But these songs arent on the "Radio"
so cats will never know

Without doubt, it will be Pharrell. Or more aptly, Fer-Real. His hot falsetto, genius production and smooth flow give him more mad skills than Jesus. He's number 1, smash hit, off the charts. The Billionaire Boy's Club is so exclusive, it just has him. Skateboard P's place in history in assured.

Close behind is probably Mika.

I'm going to check some of these bands out. It's crazy the awesome music that's out there that you don't even know exists.

I like Pharell, but in potential I mean is there something that you feel that he has and hasn't tapped into yet? Or is there something special that you want to hear from him?

Great in what sense? Its obvious that Beyoncé wil be an icon but are you talking popularity or ability. There are lots of great artists whom are to this day not "popular" but are great artists.

There are tons all over believe it or not, many unheard but they are there. The game is different today, years ago it was a labels job to filter through and find the gold, now they arent looking for gold they are looking for platnum and getting nothing, really. Thats not to say there is no good in what we call "mainstream", lets face it, mainstream is just what is popular, Prince,Madonna,Michael,Bruce etc were all mainstream artists to this day, regardless of what we think, mainstream can be a very good thing when it wants to be. As far as potential there are lots of artists, everything is a broad category, but unlike the days of when radio and labels would filter and let the best through we now are the filters.
