They used something odd for that loud clapping percussion (forgot what it was though).

Motown were known in the sixties for using odd instruments to help entice their sound (like the foot stomps that made some of the Holland-Dozier-Holland hits) or the car tools that made the Vandellas' "Dancing in the Street", "Wild One" and "Nowhere to Run" sizzle, etc.

Motown were something else and so were the Temptations.

Note: "It's Growing" featured the only time the Andantes ever sung behind the Temptations.
